I got inspired by the posts here and decided to throw a handful of spinach into my smoothie this morning, so I blended up a banana, strawberries, blueberries, spinach, flax seed, greek yogurt, and almond milk. The blueberries ensured that the drink wouldn't be green, so it didn't look any different than my usual smoothie. I was surprised--I didn't taste the spinach at all! The smoothie actually had a really good flavor--I could definitely tell something was different but it was actually better. Since someone said that she uses kale, I'm going to try chard--it's growing wild in our garden and I've run out of ways to use it, this might just be the ticket!

That sounds like a very tasy drink. I make a green veggie juice with kale, cucumber, celery and a tomatoe then add some water.
My morning smoothie keeps me full until lunch time. The recipe is:
1 cup water 1 cup orange juice (we like high pulp) 1 cup frozen strawberries 2 large handfuls of spinach (organic baby) 2 tablespoons psyllium husks 1 tablespoon ground flax seed
Blend until liquid in texture. The color is a brilliant green and the taste is very refreshing. You can also substitute kale for the spinach for even more nutrition. Hint: freeze kale. That way you can use the stems also and the drink is nice and cold.

it doesn't sound that bad if the lemon and lime flavors are strong enough to cut through the bitterness of some of the greens. It does sound like it may need at least a tiny bit of sweetener though...like an apple or something.

I always have fruit smoothies - and in my own mind, smoothie is always associated with some sort of milk product - soy milk or yogurt. A veggie smoothie sounds pretty gross - is it mixed with anything to make it thick and creamy? I love veggie *juice* which is kinda the way I imagine all these ingredients - thinner.
I have a homemade fruit & yogurt smoothie almost every day for breakfast--I knock out 2 servings of fruit and 2 servings of dairy in one shot (not to mention my calcium requirement). I was intrigued by an article in yesterday's Parade magazine where Dr. Oz lists the ingredients for a veggie smoothie--spinach, cucumber, celery, lime/lemon juice. It sounds absolutely horrible, but awfully healthy! I'm just wondering if anyone has tried something like this and whether it was tolerable to drink.
