@NAUSiKAA, that's the greatest advice I've heard in a long time. Thanks, I needed that! However, I did make the mistake of telling my co-workers that I'm trying to lose weight. Ever since then, one co-worker in specific comments on every freakin thing I eat for lunch. BIG MISTAKE, BIG MISTAKE. I will never go there again.

I don't eat sugar by the spooonful, but I do use organic cane sugar in my coffee, and flavored creamer. I also have a soda with cane sugar, no preservatives, no caffeine, no artificial flavors/colors on the weekends (I buy a 4pk of individual size glass bottles every payday so they are already portioned to last all 4 wks). I drink original almond milk (not the unsweetened) and sometimes I will have a square of dark chocolate. I have gf bread occasionally, sometimes even with almond butter and organic grape jelly and eat any fruits/veggies I desire. I don't buy 'sugar free' versions of anything, as they usually have something fake in place of them. I tried using stevia instead but I find that by having a bit of 'scheduled' sugar in my regular routine that I don't crave bread, sweets, cakes, etc. When I see them I of course think "Oh, I bet that is good" but I don't go mad for it.
I have pretty much eliminated all white flour products from my lifestyle eating, I dont use real sugar either, I use truvia. If I want something sweet, ill have a portioned out serving of fresh fruit and hot tea, or if im at school during the day ill have an 180 calorie hazelnut atkins bar, they are great for when you are craving chocolate and I love hazelnuts. Since I track everything I eat and stick to fresh fruits and veggies and 90% cleaning eating, I have yet to feel deprived and I do t even crave things like cakes, cookies, or chips anymore. To me, were all different and if it works for you thats what is most important.
TURTLESDOVE - I actually don't get those comments. For one thing, I don't usually tell people anything about my diet. In fact, I let people believe (and my rare comments support this) that I have lost weight solely from working out at the gym. In fact, all of my weight loss is from diet, but I refuse to discuss food with anyone except my husband. But I'm lucky -- I don't eat in front of other people very often. I NEVER snack in front of other people. Only at home. I just don't like the comments and the questions.
Just yesterday, a woman I work with said "every time I see you, you're thinner!" and I said "thanks, yeah I guess all that time in the gym is paying off." I always say something like that. People usually believe it, and it deflects a lot of comments because 99% of people who don't work out are deathly bored of talking about working out, and the people who DO work out, well, I don't mind talking about food and fitness with them since they are likeminded anyway.

I don't avoid sugar but I don't eat a whole lot of it either, The fiber bars I eat are the biggest source, and then the occasional food item...the small amounts in bread, sweetened yogurt, etc.. Otherwise we're talking once a week or less for manually for sweets like cookies, candy, etc. However, that isn't any different than the way I was eating before spark so it isn't in any way difficult for me...I don't have a sweet tooth at all. Im much more likely to crave cheese, tomatoes, or fresh baked bread. If I craved sweets, Id find a way to fit them in my food plan though, because this isn't a good food/bad food type deal for me.

Dragonchild...just trying to eat less processed things. I am afraid of using too much aspartame because of links to cancer. I'm not 100% against it, I just prefer not to use it as a diet tool. I'm just trying to change my lifestyle. I do not want it in my every day life.

TAMMYSUE21, why were you afraid of the aspartame? In addition to aspartame being not a big deal, there's no aspartame in Truvia. It's a processed version of the stevia plant... aspartame is a completely artificial, manufactured non-nutritive sweetener.

Yes, I eat sugar, especially in my coffee. I tried the zero calorie stuff and was fine with it, I liked Truvia the best, but then when it came down to it, I was afraid of the aspertame. My trade off is to stay away from the cookies. :) Good luck. I know it's been said a thousand times, but this is a lifetime life style change. Not a diet.

i do get comments sometimes about what i am eating. i eat things i like-which has made it easier to stick with the program. a lot of things that i eat my friends don't consider "diet" foods but it works for me.

I eat normal food. I eat sweets usually around once a day. I don't use low fat or low sugar foods. I don't do any diet foods at all. Full calorie soda on the rare occasions that I drink it. I eat whole fat ice cream. I like food to be full of flavor, not chemicals.

just something I thought about. Whenever you DO eat junk food in front of people, they say, "I THOUGHT YOU WERE ON A DIET!" Does this ever happen to ya'll? Thats why I've learned to NOT tell people I'm trying to lose weight!
It is hard for me to say no to sugar sometimes. I try to only have one cookie or half a brownie instead. If you limit yourself to no sugar I think it would be harder to stay on track. We all need a little treat once in a while, as long as you don't overdo it.

Another sweet tooth here, and while I have cut down on the less healthy treats, I certainly still have them. (In fact, last night, I had two Cadbury Creme Eggs. I mean, hey, they're only around for a few weeks--gotta get my fix!) I have lost more than 60 lbs. so far eating this way. A more restrictive approach would never work for me.

i didn't cut sugar out completely. i did cut down on the amount of sugar and sweets i was eating. i am not a big fan of sugar free foods, so i don't eat them that much.
I too have a sweet tooth, and I most certainly eat sugar and lose weight. I fit it all into my calories. My biggest "vice" is dried fruit (not the natural kind, the sugared-candied kind). In fact I just had my dessert - 30g of dried strawberries and kiwis (basically 100% sugar), over 100 calories - but I fit it into my range.

Oh I forgot to mention... if the sweet tooth is REALLY bad and I don't have the calorie room to add in an extra snack, I'll drink a can of diet cherry 7-up. Somehow that seems to help the cravings.

wow you guys. Great replies. This I know for sure. Eating nothing but sweets, I don't get filled up. It's like going to an all you can eat buffet, and being thrown out by the manager. Eating nothing but healthy food, I don't get satisfied. It's like going to an all you can eat buffet and only being allowed to eat the carrot sticks and hummus. BUT, with a mixture of the two, I get full and satisfied! I just make sure not to go over my calorie allotment. This is definately doable. You guys are the greatest. Thanks

I have a love hate relationship with sugar-anything from cookies, brownies, pies, frosting, m&ms, even the fiber and granola bars. Anything to get my'fix'.
Because I 'overdosed on fiber bars, I thought it qould be a good idea to give up processed foods for lent and I was struggeling with that for awhile. Instead of refined or artificial sweeteners, I'm using pure cane sugar, maple syrup, or honey for baking and cooking. It's expensive, so I'm using them sparingly. Other alternatives for things like oatmeal and baking are dates and raisins.
For a snacky fix, I make my own granola and am sure to keep apples, pears, bananas and oranges in stock. It's doing the trick so far.Good luck!

I don't know, I can only saw how it is in my mind. I know that eating a lot of sugar at once makes me feel bad. And I know that eating sugary things regularly ("just because", or for any emotional reason) isn't part of the lifestyle I want. I'm not absolutist, and I do want to have sweets for special occasions like birthday parties, or in (very) small portions at other times, but mostly I want nothing to do with them. They just don't fit in my life and they do nothing good for me that's worth the negatives.

I eat sugar every day. I have a huge sweet tooth. BUT, I did cut out most things like cookies, cupcakes, etc because for the amount of calories they have, it's just not worth it. I'll have them for special occasions. But, my evening snack most evenings consists of a bowl of froot loops, which is 110 calories for 1 cup. In the mornings, I have a 1/2 cup of 0% greek yogurt, an apple cut up, along with some granola & raisins all mixed up. It really helps the sweet tooth issue, and it's super filling with lots of other good nutrients too. I also have a Fiber granola bar every afternoon, it has some chocolate in it. I also often cook with natural sweet ingredients like honey or pure maple syrup (in sauces/marinades). Also, like a PP, I plan it out ahead of time.... eating extra sweets on a whim usually doesn't bode well for me.
So, I think your plan is a good idea... work what you like into your plan, and it makes it much more sustainable.

Me. :) I'm not a big sweet-eater, but I do have it in my diet. I don't stay away from sweet stuff, but it's also not a trigger for me at all. My triggers are simple carbs (which when you think about it, are pretty much sugar anyway.)
You don't have to cut anything from your diet to lose weight. It's all about moderation. Eating sugar will not prevent you from losing weight when you're otherwise at a calorie deficit. The most common culprit for lack of weight loss is inaccurate tracking: Overestimating calories burned, and underestimating calories eaten.
Funny but I get bad and surly when I restrict carbs too much. Moderation is key for me.
I am not on a diet but am trying to have a healthy relationship with food and learn about nutrition. The weight is coming off slowly.

I do it. I still try to watch that I don't go crazy and I don't indulge in sweets/treats on a whim. I plan them out ahead of time. I've lost 53 lbs in 7 months. It's more about the calories in vs. calories out than the foods being chosen.
I choose healthy foods and a healthy diet because I love to eat these foods more than the processed junk I used to eat before. And because they're best for my health, energy level, fitness increases and help ensure I'm meeting my recommended macro and micro nutrient requirements. They also help keep me full and satisfied on a calorie deficit.

Right on, Coach Jen! That's exactly what I was going to say. So, I'll just add that I've been losing a few pounds even though I eat slow churned ice cream 5-6 times a week as dessert. Yes, it's high in sugar & calories (I eat 2 serving sizes) but because I balance it with mostly clean-eating the rest of the day, it works for me.....and yeah, I can eat like this forever. Ice cream once a day, are you kidding me?! It's about balance & smart choices.

I think everyone needs to find a style of eating that works best for them. I think it's good to include foods you love (in moderation), because then it becomes a permanent lifestyle change instead of a restrictive "diet".
If it will work for you, go for it. however for me, that would never work. Refined sugars actually put me in a bad surly mood. I get tired quickly and can't get enough to eat. However, when I fill up on my greens, fruits, nuts and seeds and other living sprouts, i feel fantastic and have energy to burn. I find now if (and that is a HUGE if), refined sugar i actually get sick to my stomach. I feel run down and crabby. My body is like WTH? Where are my greens? I have the proper enzymes to break that down, but I have no clue what to do with this bagel or cookie so I will just let it sit there until I figure it out.

Just curious. I go back and forth between what I should eat and what I shouldn't eat. I really do just want to eat what I'm craving and watch my calories, but when I eat simple carbs, I cannot reach the feeling of satisfaction. I guess that's why Lays chips says, "no one can eat just one" White food, such as chips, cake, stuff like that, the stuff I gained weight on in the first place, just makes me feel good and puts me in a better mood, if only temporarily. I was thinking to just incorporate a little of eat in my diet, and eat it with filling foods, such as beans, greek yogurt, and so forth. Does that sound like a plan? All while watching my overall calorie intake, that is!
