I do crunches on a stability ball, lift weights, walk, and run. I eat a vegan diet.

You can get great abs from running but unless your body fat is low you'll never be able to see them. You have to eat right too.

I do more core than abs specifically. I do a lot of Pilates, and my workouts, given to me by my instructor, definitely focus on core strength because of a back injury. My abs come along for the ride and there is definitely a difference for me.

I like to do a lot of functional movement exercises. Squats work your core stabilizing muscles as well as your legs. This is especially true if you do balance work. One leg squats. Free weight shoulder press balancing on one leg. One leg deadlifts and things like that will work your core.

A strong lower back is important too so back extensions and supermans are good for strengthening that.

I find running, you could walk depending on fitness level is a great whole body workout especially if you do a hill or two.

My favourite ab exercises are

Planks front, side and rear
Mountain climbers
Hanging leg raises

I will do a couple sets of these once or twice a week.

I eat clean too, real whole unprocessed foods.

6-pack abs have more to do with body fat percentage-- it's often said that abs are made in the kitchen. Makes sense if you think about it.... you could do a ton of ab exercises but if you've still got a lot of belly fat, those muscles will be hidden under a layer of fat. One of the Spark Coaches has said something similar to: I have a 6-pack. You just can't see it under my soft-side cooler. lol.

Also, you cannot spot reduce. When your body uses fat as fuel, it does not "take it" from the area you are working on. So doing a lot of ab exercises doesn't mean your body is necessarily going to burn all the fat from the ab area.

So..... does that mean we don't work the abs? Of course not, it just means we need to be realistic about the results we're going to get. Cardio + strength training + a healthy, well-balanced diet (within our calorie ranges for weight loss) = a better body.

I am trying my best to develop good eating habits and cardio. I have read that it's pointless to do crunches for a 6-pack if you're not eating correctly or working on cardio. Anyone else heard this?

I do Pilates which is a lot of core work. When I'm doing Pilates every week I can definitely feel and see a difference.

some of the boot camp workouts we do target abs/core (Monday night's class did)

the HIIT/Tabata class that I take always concludes with an ab workout on the floor
