It would be interesting if you had kept a diary of when and why you drank diet soda. There were some good studies of aspartame and headache that actually advanced the study of migraine. They took people who "knew" that aspartame gave them headaches and gave half of them aspartame in a form where they didn't know if they were getting it. When they didn't know they were getting it, that group didn't get any more headaches than the control group that didn't get any aspartame. With a little more digging, they found that people were grabbing for a diet cola or a cup of coffee with sweetener when they got the first subconscious symptoms that a migraine or other headache was about to start. The headache actually caused them to consume aspartame instead of the opposite.
Something similar could be happening with the weight. It would be hard to trace, but you surely didn't just randomly now and then think, "I need to drink Diet Coke and see if it makes my weight loss stall." You drank Diet Coke because you were with other people who were drinking it, or because you'd had a hard day and really wanted one, or because it just seemed like it would taste really good with what you were eating, or something like that. If you could figure out what the trigger is for the Diet Coke, you might find an interesting trigger for weight loss mini-plateaus.
The only problem I have with aspartame is that it stalls my weight loss. I will be losing 2-3 lbs a week, and if I drink a Diet Coke, I stop immediately. It takes several days to start losing again. This experience has been well documented. It may just be that you are drinking pop, or the sodium. I have no idea. I prefer to drink plain water.
One thing you will find though, is that if you stop the drops for 3-4 weeks, and just drink plain water, by the end, you will LOVE plain water. We don't need added sugar of any kind, or sugar substitutes. There is plenty of sugar in our foods. Just eat real food, and drink plain water, and in a moth, it is what you will crave.
In the long list of harmful products out there though, I think focusing on any one of them is a waste. I would put sugar at the top though, as ANARIE said. I just think that going to diet keeps the idea of drinking pop as an option in your mind. Better choice.. sure. Good choice.. probably not. I think the same thing of zero calorie sugar substitute drops. They are not necessary, and just keep us from drinking what we are supposed to.. plain water.
Folks, please DO read the articles mentioned by Sunshine. Aside from the first one, which I couldn't locate, the others all actually say there's no association between artificial sweeteners and the illnesses listed in their titles.
I'm not sure why there's SO much alarmism about artificial sweeteners. The only proven health risk was with cyclamates and saccharin, and it turned out to be a health risk only to rats. When they were fed the equivalent of hundreds of diet sodas a day for most of their life, they had a slightly higher rate of a type of cancer that humans don't get in a type of cell humans don't have. Those sweeteners were banned in the US (though the ban on saccharin was lifted) because they're very slightly dangerous to rats. Don't give your pet rat TAB cola, and everything will be fine.
We should all reduce our intake of sweets, no matter what they're sweetened with. But unless you're going to cut out sweets 100%, sugar remains more dangerous to most people than artificial sweeteners. We KNOW, for a 100% certainty, that excessive sugar use contributes to obesity, one of the most dangerous and difficult to treat medical conditions ever to face humans. I decided long ago that the weight gain that would be caused by drinking regular sodas was much more dangerous than any potential risk from drinking diet Cokes. (Now I rarely drink either, which is probably the smartest solution.)
As for the original question, the flavor drops aren't going to make much of a difference. If you can, it's always better to drink regular water; if it tastes bad where you live, try getting a filter. But if that doesn't work, a drop of Mio a day isn't going t hurt you in any serious way.

Dear GYPSYGOTH-- Aspartame is one of the most researched food additives. I am not aware of any research to support your statement that " aspartame makes your brain cells run around like crazy , then pop and die." This is inaccurate information.

Yes, sucrose is table sugar and it would contain 16 calories/teaspoon. Perhaps the amount of sucrose used is minimal and the calories in each serving are less than 5 so legally it can be listed as 0 calories?
Are there other ingredients (artificial sweeteners) such as aspartame, acesulfame potassium, sorbitol that add sweetness to your water??

How does the body break down sucrose? I look at the 0 caloris water enhanser squirt adds I have and they all contain sucrose. Thats regualar table sugar though right? Same as I put in my tea and cookies? So shouldnt my body produce insulin the same for it and thus have the potential to store fat from unused energy?
What I'm getting at it the flavor I'm adding to my water impacting my weight and throwing off my food tracking method?
