Sounds great, but I would think that kinds of work would count as cardio, not strength training. As much as your arms get sore from that kind of repetition work, it is not really likely to be the kind of heavy lifting that will help build stength, especially at your fitness level.

totally agree, that it depends, do think that moving rock (or dirt, in my case) counts for something more than daily activity ;)

I always loved doing activities with my kids. Whether it was TKD, little league, or work around the house. It helps to bond with them and teach them so many things.

As far as yard work not being something to add to an exercise plan, that depends. Anything that is above or beyond what a person normally does will add to their BMR. So if one does office work all day long and then takes on some good prolonged yard work, it will burn extra calories. But if one does landscaping as a job all day long and then does his own on the weekend, I doubt it does much good.

It also depends on just how intense this work is. If it is just transplanting a few potted plants and watering, again, not much intensity there. But for the last two weeks, I not only was doing yard work that was above and beyond my normal day, it was intense. I relocated about 10 cu. yds of deco rock and dirt. Most the time it was heavy shoveling and many times with clay I had to bust through with a pick ax. There were also roots from the stump I busted out that added to the work. So this yard work took more out of me than my regular workout routine and I swapped it during this time on my tracker.

So there are plenty of benefits of any extra work, especially when with the family.

That makes sense.

At the same time, I added a project with my boys recently that included moving a few yards of dirt. It was just as hard as the running or other high intensity workouts that I do on a regular basis. Just food for thought.

While yardwork and chores might feel like a workout, I count it as normal active day stuff. I will also put in an actual workout, even if it is a shorter one. A set of dumbbells work great at the end of the day to add this.

It is good to find things to do with the boys. You will never regret it. I did a lot with mine when he was growing up. He come back to do things with me now.

I'm having so much fun adding yard work with my boys into my weekly exercise routine.

There are so many jobs around our yard that get the heart rate going and count as strength training, but are practical and fun to do with my boys.

Anyone else out there discovered this? What's your favorite job to include your kids in?
