I don't know what whole grains you're eating but for PCOS people, you can't have rice, potatoes, most breads, crackers, etc. so even if you are eating whole grain bread, if you have too much, you won't lose a pound.


A paleo diet would probably work on you.

Hi,
This might be a personal question, so feel free to not answer or answer in a private message, but were you on birth control and went off? The reason I ask is because this happened to me in my early 30s and I was quite healthy. I went off the pill and instantly gained about 15 lbs in ONE MONTH. I was freaking out.

My doctor was able to diagnose PCOS in me, which was being somewhat hidden by the hormones in the pill, so while I was on it, I didn't see the effects of the syndrome.

It would be worth checking into PCOS - if you haven't already. However, the main way to treat it is through diet/exercise. Whether you do or don't have this, you are very likely insulin resistant which means you will have a much harder time losing weight than most and the most important thing for you is lots of exercise and limited carbs and literally no refined carbs -but sounds like you do that anyway.

Some people go on metformin for PCOS and it supposedly helps, but I am not suggesting you take medication...see a doctor first (a different one) and try to find out what is going on.

Since you have tried it all before...one more may be the answer (don't look at my tracker here as I have not updated my info in a long time).

There are different interpretations of 'healthy eating' out there and just reading your post about the 'weight watchers sundaes' sort of set off a red flag (in my mind)...healthy would be real ice cream made from cream not some chemically manufactured almost plastic replica...junk can still be consumed as long as you go for high quality REAL junk that is so good you don't need as much to satisfy the junk craving.

Anyway, before you go paying crazy money for something that may or may not work I encourage you to have a boo through this website...it may just be the answer. Good luck to you!

Ohhhhh doctors.

My worst doctor memory was an ob/gyn "infertility specialist" (HA! most useless doctor i ever have known) who made me chart my morning temperature on a calendar, and put an asterisk on "days we attempted to conceive" and upon bringing in my monthly calendar one day, he poked his finger at a five-day gap between asterisks and said "what is this? were you on strike??" emoticon

But ask yourself, why punish yourself (referring to the episode of self-hating self-sabotaging food consumption that followed your appointment) for someone else's bad behavior? Her opinion of you does not define you! Get mad about it, but don't get mad at YOU.

I hope you have better luck with your next doctor. Do consider, however, the possibility that whatever is "off" with your metabolism/hormones or whatever, might just be part of "how you are" that you will have to work around - there might not be any particular course of treatment. In which case, you still can lose weight, but it will be a different and possibly more difficult challenge to do so, than for the "typical" woman (whoever she may be). Don't get discouraged... try and be consistent in your efforts, and consider looking into ways of coping with the "emotional eating" issue that plagues so many of us here! Good luck!

I feel for you. I agree with others who have said to try to find an Endocrinologist. They check LOTS of numbers, including hormones. Also, food allergies or intolerances play a part too.

My (now former) gyn was equally horrible, but said different words. On my 2nd (?) visit,I had worn sweats to the visit (after all it's clothes off clothes on). He said if that is the way I dressed normally, it wasn't sexy enough to attract my hubby and that is most likely why we had not been intimate in quite a while. While I understand he is from a foreign country, still doc...

I started seeing him when I was 38 (?). I told him that my LH (lactating hormone) and FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) were sky high for years. That meant that I am either close to menopause or post-menopausal. He said, "Rubbish, you're too young." I had been on birth control to regulate my horribly irregular period. He would not renew it. He said the ONLY acceptable reason for birth control is to prevent pregnancy. He said my being on the birth control patch increased my risk for cancer. It was only through 6 years of waiting in waiting rooms for hours to see him, no answers, looking down his nose at me, and rushing me through visits, I finally had enough. Why did I stay? He gave me a medication that helped my severe vertigo. I did not want another gyn to refuse to renew it. However, he is not the only gyn I left...there was also another woman doctor I left.

My new gyn is a breath of fresh air. He said that I am probably in menopause. He said there were some teenagers he had seen that were in menopause and had to take estrogen for many years. I understood that my forner doc had taken me off birth control and put me on just progesterone. Progesterone protects your "womanly" organs from cancer.

Don't let one bad apple spoil the bunch. If you have to, find another gyn. I hope you find the answers you are looking for. Good luck.

I've been so sad about this. I think about this CONSTANTLY. From the moment I wake up in the morning from the moment I go to bed, weight loss (or my inability to lose weight) is always running through my head. I cried pretty hard about it last night. My eyes are all puffy, and I might go home early from work because I feel so bad about it.

I don't take meds for my thyroid. I did try an allergist. I'm trying the holistic approach with this bioidentical doctor. I went to endocrinologists, dietitians, gynecologists, personal trainers, Jenny Craig, Seattle Sutton, Insanity, SparkPeople, Nutrisystem. Seriously, you name it, I've tried it. My lab results always come back great because I eat such a healthy diet and because I exercise moderately. I have low blood pressure. My glucose levels are great. There are two times in my life I've actually lost weight- both of which included starving myself.

I feel so terrible about this whole thing!

I've gained, yes gained, 3 pounds since I started tracking all of my food and exercise this round (beginning January 1st.) 3 pounds for me is not the input output equation. If that were true, the 60 pounds I gained in a short amount of time at the end of 2012 would have meant I was eating constantly and consuming thousands of calories per day.

I can't wait to see the next round of doctors, hoping that they find this missing link. I worry most that no doctor will ever take the time to discover what is off. What if I'm just destined to always be really heavy? Will I ever be happy with myself heavy? I'm not a depressed person- but this has really gotten to me.

I agree with everyone-I'd find another doctor. Do you take meds for your thyroid? That can make you put on the weight. When I was on it, I was gaining 30 pounds per month, even though I was exercising and eating healthier (I was even working at a horse farm for 8-10 hours and was riding 3 horses-needless to say, I was very active!); the nurse told me that it happens with some people and after that, I stopped taking it. I went on the meds to help me lose, not to make me gain (yes, and to fix the thyroid, obviously!). I hope this helps.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone! Sparkers really know how to be sensitive in a time of frustration.

I appreciate all of the suggestions. I'm glad to know there are others out there that may suffer from a similar situation- not that I want others to suffer, but it's good to know I'm not alone.

I've had several appointments with complacent doctors, but for some reason this one really got to me.

My husband spoke to a mentor of his from med school, and it was suggested I see a bariatric doctor- not for the surgery, but for the thorough examination and evaluation patients receive before the surgery. There are other avenues I'll try as well, including some of the suggestions I've heard below.

Don't let one bad experience with one doctor derail your efforts to find the answers and get healthy. I've done that and I wish I hadn't. It took ten years to get a proper diagnosis of my hormone problems. Then it took another ten to find out what hormone exactly was out of balance. I've known since my 20s that something was wrong. In my case the hormones imbalances were so slight that it was difficult for the doctors to see the problem. It looked like I was close enough to the normal ranges that it shouldn't be a problem. But if you look at my symptoms, it's obvious that I have PCOS. It also took an MRI to find a tumor on my pituitary gland that was affecting my hormones also. Endocrinologists have been the ones to give me the most help because they knew what to look for. Gynecologists have been some of the worst doctors I've seen. Keep trying until you find someone who is willing and able to help you. You and your health are important!

It's strange that this day in age that there is still a stigma that if you are in your 20's or even your 30's hormones don't play a roll in anything you thyroid is healthy automatically. Obesity is an epidemic nation wide (US) and yes for most of us portion control, proper nutrition and activity are the very best keys to control our weight for most of us, but there are so many other factors that can contribute to rapid gain or difficulty losing. Find a doctor that will listen, try to keep yourself positive and strong.

A 60 lb gain in 6 months, 10 lbs a month, is worrisome.My suggestion is that you get make an appointment for a complete physical with a different doctor. It might be a hormone problem but it could be something else. A definate diagnosis before spending money on a biodentical hormone replacement specialist might be a good idea.

The doctor you saw was a fool. Don't let that experience keep you from getting medical help. Keep searching until you find one you like.

I agree with what BRIT said. Don't let this doctor, who apparently can't even follow her own "simple" advice get you down. Keep searching for someone who LISTENS and walks the walk. Sounds like you have already had to fight harder than others--you can do this!

I'm sorry you had such a frustrating experience. I won't pretend to be able to guess what is going on with your health, but I would urge you to keep trying. I went to sooooooo many different doctors over years until finally a couple of them found the problem. I also saw a natropath/nutritionist who really helped me out while the doctors still couldn't figure anything out.

I actually visited the same dr. at the same time twice a week to have them weigh, measure and xray me. They also checked levels. It was great to at least have them note my symptoms even if the cause was still unknown.

About 5 years later, a medication came on the market that worked for me. I can't say everything is perfect, but it's a lot better than it was. Hang in there, and keep advocating for yourself!

What a frustrating experience! I'm sorry you went through that. It sounds like she may have simply been trying to get through the appointment as quickly as possible rather than really put heads together and think about what might be going on.

I find it very odd that she wouldn't think to check hormone levels at your age -- how old are you? I'm 31 and on my first visit to a new gynecologist (with a similar complaint - I had been gaining weight) she had 11 of my hormones checked. I didn't have to request this. It's pretty standard.

While it may not be a calories in / calories out equation for you, unless you are photosynthesizing (and have therefore solved world hunger), you ARE getting energy from someplace and using it. So maybe you need to do a metabolism study like doubly labeled water to see how many calories you actually are burning. I know that I only burn about 1500 calories/day which is about 600 fewer than what a "normal" woman with all my stats would burn. And that's with an hour of heavy exercise every morning! Some of us are just really unlucky!

Good luck in getting it sorted out. You need a new doctor! (But not necessarily a thin doctor. I had a very heavy nutritionist, I'd guess she was around 270 lbs, and she was great.)

I agree you need another avenue. Endocrinologist (if you think it's a hormonal thing); dietician, or at least someone who takes you and your issues seriously. That bioidentical hormone stuff, I think it's not quite there yet.

It sounds like you were very unfortunate to get such a thoughtless and seemingly uncaring Dr. I would be giving her the flick and getting someone who really DOES have a good bed-side manner and not jump to (inaccurate) assumptions.

One thing I have noticed with comments made by members in US is that if you get a Dietician appointment it is often only one or two appointments. I see one regularly in NZ. I had been a member of SP for a long time when I was referred by my Dr. I had used my Nutrition Tracker daily and weighed all my food (as I still do!) I took some random printouts for her to see what and how much I ate. This helped her immensely, and who in turn was able to help me. You see, I had always eaten a very healthy diet and within a normal weight-loss range but I was still gaining. My thyroid levels were o.k. (just borderline) and I didn't have other issues which can aggravate weight; i.e. PCOS. After my first appointment with her I started to lose weight, slowly but surely, and have since reached my goal. It took 16 months to lose just over 50lb, and I happily sat there for a year before deciding to move on down again. (I had been overweight for about 30 years.) I still see my Dietician, but only 3-4 times a year now.

Good luck with finding the cause!

I rely on doctors for weight loss advice in the same way I rely on weathermen for advice on the weather. Sometimes they know what they're talking about. Other times, they're just reading the teleprompter and have no idea at all of what they're talking about.

Doctors are not always as smart as they should be. (We could say the same for all humanity, I suppose.)

I share in your frustration. From your efforts to comply with the "equation" to the doctor who thinks it is so easy. I have seen multiple doctors as well. I was given the "eat 1100 calories", eat veggies, etc. It's unbelievable that a professional thinks an individual who has gone to great efforts to solve the problem lacks basic knowledge. As if the doctor's office is the first stop!

I don't know the answer myself, as I am in the same boat. However, just know you are not alone and the insanity is shared. : ) Keep going!

Some doctors come on too strong and preachy without offering concrete solutions or understanding the person to be a unique individual with unique problems.
Since you have tried a lot of different methods already have you considered some more alternative methods such as Homeopathy or Naturopathy doctors? These treatments take time to show results but are usually more wholesome in their approach. They take into consideration the entire person, body and mind and offer natural solutions. Some Yoga practitioners also teach specific yoga exercises to treat the underlying condition along with breathing techniques to reduce stress. They also are familiar with herbs and more alternative medicines. You may want to consider that??
Although, I completely understand your frustrating experience with the doctor, please donít turn to food for comfort. That is only a fleeting, temporary comfort. Your doctor spoiled your day but you donít have to spoil it further with you own actions. I really did say that out of concern so please donít take it as a rude remark. Donít let other peopleís behavior affect you so much. Change the doctor and keep doing the right things and right things will eventually happen to you.

I can understand your frustrations. You've been to many doctors and none of them seem to have a solution for you. I would definitely find another doctor. If I told my doctor I had a 60 pound weight gain over a six month period, I can't tell you how many tests he'd be doing on me to find out what was going on. It strikes me that any good doctor would be concerned with that sort of gain.

You need to find a doctor who can think outside the box. You need the real life equivalent of Dr House.

Have you ever considered an allergist ? I'm no doctor, but perhaps some of your recent problems could be related to food allergies. Since every usual option has been considered, now you have to consider the unusual.

After a few bad experiences, I got to the point where I would pay for an appointment out of pocket just to meet the doctor first and see if I want them to be my doctor. I look at healthcare as a team approach, and if that doctor isn't willing to work with me, instead of just lecturing me, then they aren't the doctor for me.

I would seek another dr, maybe a specialist on hormones or metabolism before I did the expensive bioidentical thing. I know that weight is much more complicated than calories in calories out, metabolism is not a static number and it sounds like something is wrong. A dr who has such a simplistic view of your weight would have gotten a rather scathing reply from me.

This is a long post, I'm sorry, but you have to get the big picture to understand how upset I was.

Yesterday I had to go the gynecologist. I've moved around a lot lately because I went to college and grad school in different states, so it's difficult to describe my medical history to a doctor.

I've had issues with some hormone levels (hypothyroidism, and very low estradiol for a 26 year old). I've also have gone to specialist after specialist because I cannot lose weight. This isn't just a calories in, calories out equation for me. I've literally tried everything- Nutrasystem, personal trainers, Weight Watchers, Sparkpeople, dieticians, Insanity workouts, P90X... bottom line, there is something wrong beyond the simple, works-for-99%-of-the-population solution.

No one believes me that something is going on. I'm exhausted from counting calories, protein, and carbs every day of my life. Quite frankly, I've cut back on working out. I only work out about 2 times a week now because I never see results (on the scale or measurements).

I know one thing- my body is carb sensitive. I try to keep my carbohydrates limited to whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and SOME sweet treats. If I don't have any at all, I binge. So I figured consistent moderation is better than the alternative.

Back to the doctor visit- The second my doctor walked into the room, I got a terrible vibe. She was sloppy, very overweight, and had terribly bedside manner. She started asking medical-related questions, and when I mentioned I gained 60 pounds in the past six months quite unexpectedly, and that it was a cause for concern, she didn't say much.

First, she said she'd never check hormone levels on someone my age when I mentioned my last doctor was concerned about my estradiol levels. My husband, who is in medical school, thought that was really close-minded and ignorant. Then, she did the exam. Finally, she sat me down to discuss my weight.

She was shaming me for my BMI. (I described my weight loss problem with her as described earlier). She said that losing weight was really simple- 1) Eat breakfast 2) Eat protein and vegetables 3) Stay away from sugar. This was the most demeaning thing I've ever heard. If I've gone to all these specialists, paid good money to try all these different approaches to weight loss, wouldn't you think I'd know and live by these basic tokens of advice?

Aside from the ignorance of this part of the conversation, how could I take her seriously if she was as overweight as she was? If things were that simple, wouldn't she be in a healthy weight range? She was notably obese, and had difficulty getting around in the exam room. She set a terrible example as a doctor.

So, instead of coming home to work out as planned, I cried and ate sweets. I figured, "If this is what people perceive me as, I might as well live up to their expectations." I ate 2 weight watcher sundaes, and 4 or 5 pieces of mini candies. I also ate an atypical dinner- a grilled cheese sandwich with avocado and chips! (I never eat chips) In the end, I was only 400 calories over the Spark-recommended range, but that could have easily been avoided if I could have had thicker skin and not gotten so sensitive to that terrible doctor's ignorance.

I have an appointment with a bioidentical hormone replacement specialist (not covered by insurance and it will cost a crazy amount of money) in March. I pray that this guy isn't some quack taking advantage of the desperate. What else can I really do though? I still eat well and work out moderately, but without some medical intervention, ignorant doctors and people only view me as overweight. I'm so frustrated!
