I was on a cruise once.. did workout in the gym - great views all around of the water! I also danced a lot, kept plenty busy with all that. The gym was busy the first two days then it was almost empty the rest of the time
Another thing I do on a cruise is to take the stairs whenever possible. On our December cruise, it was 108 steps from the main atrium up to our cabin; and, often I would be two decks lower when I started, so add another 20 steps or so.
That's quite a workout, done several times a day.
I would take an elevator only if wearing really uncomfortable heels or if we were in a great rush. I still gained 4 lbs., but it was a 17 day cruise, plus two flying days.
I ate what I wanted, which was too much, but our cruises are one time when I just try to enjoy food without stressing over it, while trying to maintain some semblance of sanity in eating.

I haven't been on a Cruise, but I have never felt the need to "work out" in the traditional gym sense while on vacation. I find that I am much more naturally active on vacation mostly because I am walking everywhere and swimming everyday. So if you want to go to the gym, great! But if you find yourself getting a good work out in doing other activities then don't feel pressure to be in the gym everyday!

Absolutely! Vacation, on a cruise or not, is no excuse to stop exercising. You may have to adapt but I think it's a great to keep moving. I have been on a few cruises and I have used their machines and participated in a few classes. It was fun!
This is what I do on a cruise... I sign up for late seating for dinner so that I would have time to return to the ship, workout, shower, and then eat dinner. For the most part, I went to the gym every other day, and I used the treadmill as my cardio. The most I did was 73 minutes (I remembered because it was the worst sea day - still get dizzy thinking about it).
I definitely suggest that you utilize it. They also have classes, sometimes for a nominal fee, but figure out what cardio will work best for you. Some can't do the treadmill because you can get dizzy - on that dizzying cruise, it was rough waters, not because I was on the treadmill.
The gym was ALWAYS crowded on our last cruise. The walking/running track was a good option though. And the cruise staff did a morning/walk job (but it was 9am, which was too late, as there were other activities we wanted to do). I ended up going to the gym at 9pm, and would be the only one there. (we have little kids, so we didn't do any of the late night shows). But I did find it hard to use the treadmill with the rocking of the ship. Even though I didn't work out as much as I do at home, I only gained 2 lbs on our 2 week cruise!!
Apart from the working out on board, try and choose from the more active shore excursions. There is often a guided walk around the town, or even a cycle tour. And even if you don't take an official tour, you could always take a do-it-yourself walking tour.
Perhaps use the opportunity of a sea day for a gym class, and try something completely new?
Like exercise the rest of the time, the hardest part is going to be actually GOING to the gym! I have used the gym on a few cruises, if I recall it was mostly cardio equipment, with a few machines reserved just for classes. I always found plenty of equipment was available unless there was a class going, and then it may have been a little too busy.
Don't forget other options like swimming or walking laps around the deck. Also don't forget that the easiest way to lose those calories is to never take them in in the first place - cruise ships are a floating foodfest and there are opportunities to eat around the clock. On my first 7 day cruise, I gained 7 pounds - a pound a day!!! If you can limit your eating to your normal meal times and resist piling up your plate at the buffet, you'll already do better than many. I'm not saying you shouldn't enjoy the great food, just try to stay closer to maintenance, rather than maintenance + another 2500 calories!

When I went on my first cruise last year, I did not use the gym. But... I should have. I gained like 10 lbs on that cruise from all of the food that was available (at all hours of the day and night..) and I had no excuse for not working out - we spent a lot of time relaxing in our room/on our balcony, and the entire gym had a GREAT view!! I wish we would have taken advantage of it.
I've used them on two major lines, both newer and older ships. I found them to be well equipped, clean, and staffed. Classes were offered and the hours were generous so fitting in a workout was easy.
I did not lift weights unless we were in port and stopped. I found the pitching and rolling of the ship while at sea challenged my ability to keep proper form. Cardio was good at either time.

i've seen amenities on cruise ship gyms (online, I have never been on an actual cruise) that many land gyms don't have, like rock climbing walls, treadmills that overlook the water, etc. In short, it theoretically should not be difficult at all to get a great workout while on vacation.
