I live in a high rise, great view 11th floor..set up my Peugeot racing bike on my wind trainer for rainy days. No rain so I'm outside cycling. I live next to town park with 2 mi of bike trails...its Great!! Got so much motivation since joining Sparkpeople! Been out every day! Also started situps and pushups short reps but I'm building up. Lost 3 lbs already in a week! I'm 60 yrs old on October 1.......I feel great. Thanx Sparkpeople!

I've lived in apartments and worked out pretty intensely sometimes(jumping jacks and all!) on upper floors. I just made sure to tell my downstairs neighbours that they could let me know when I was disturbing them too much. No one ever complained and we all got along just fine.
If you think exercising makes a lot of noise, try living below a 3 year old kid who runs around all day...drove me crazy!!

Why not try some pilates or yoga -- plain old body-weight exercises like planks with leg lifts are great core exercises and not noisy. Great for strength training -- I used to live in a high rise apartment in Boston and would do pilates indoors when the weather was bad. Also, the stairs were inside so I would walk up and down stairs to get some cardio in -- never seemed to bother anyone when I did that for 15-20 minutes up and down.

Insanity and P90X are at-home programs and they ROCK. There are several produced by Beachbody. They have 30/60/90 programs with every day laid out, what you do for your workout. So it isn't like popping in the same DVD day after day, which can get boring. There's a nutrition and support component to it, as well.

I use Zumba and Beachbody's Shaun T's Hip Hop Abs or Rockin' Body work-outs. There is some toe-tapping, but not a ton of jumping up and down, and they are fabulous calorie burners, and don't require a lot of space. I even did them while living in a studio! Someone may have already suggested these, depends on what you are looking for.

I'm going to recommend the Wii Fit, because it's worked well for me when I didn't want to go to the gym. I'm in a second-story apartment where the slightest movement seems like I'm going to cause thunder to rattle the lower apartment, but I -can- do stair-stepping and some of the "running" games on Wii Fit without causing too much of a ruckus. I am, though, looking into alternatives (an exercise bike or treadmill -- probably the former, because I don't want to haul 200lbs of the latter up stairs). :)

I live in a second-floor apartment with fairly limited space too, and Leslie Sansone videos worked great for me. Of course, as someone else suggested, if you're even thinking of trying P90X, Leslie might be far too tame to be worth your time! I also thought the suggestion of some sort of mats or rugs for padding was a pretty good one.
Also, I must say it again -- hooray for you being such a considerate neighbor! Especially toward folks who seem rather chilly toward you. That kind of consideration is surprisingly difficult to find!

Hello, I too live in Upstate New York and I have neighbors below me in an apartment. I just choose to work out first am in my living room. I could careless how they think because I need to workout. I haven't worked out like I had been, but I did P90X and finished it. You pay rent like everyone else. Just do your workout and not worry about your neighbors. It's not like you are working out in your bedroom at 2 am! Pick a time that is during the day even if it's first am or something. Don't worry about your neighbors. The only time I worry is if I ever workout after 9 pm at which time I choose not to as I have my own general rule of no noise after 9 pm. When I did workout (which I need to do), I did at 5:30 am. :-)

Calisthenics, pilates, weight lifting, resistance band workouts - all are silent and they work! I lost 44 pounds and never, ever jumped once! I worked with a trainer, in a gym, in my apartment - wherever - and it doesn't need to make noise.

Do you enjoy dance? I've started taking belly dancing classes and they are a great workout because they involve cardio and muscle building movements and don't require jumping around a lot. I can do dance drills in my room without bothering my room mates or the grumpy guy who lives downstairs. :)

As long as you're not doing it in the middle of the night, I don't think a half hour of jumping now and then would be so bad for your neighbors. Trust me, none of my upstairs neighbors ever gave a thought to me when they were clomping around upstairs, moving furniture in the middle of the night (I'm serious!)
But if you really need no-noise workouts, try the balance ball, Leslie Sansome's Walk Away the Pounds video, and the SP seated cardio video. Good luck. You're a nice neighbor!

I'm fortunate to live in a concrete block and no one has been below me for a few months, but I don't think I'm that loud during Insanity. I do it on carpet...which is good and bad, softer on the joints, harder for some of the quick plyo movements. There is only one set of moves so far that I'm really like 'oh my goodness, I'm loud'! It's when you do tuck jumps on the cardio abs dvd. I am only in my first month and have done about half of the dvd's so far.
Remember you pay rent too. And you have an agreement with your landlord, not the people below you.
Do you own a bike? I want to get a stand for my bike so I can use it in my apartment in the winter. A dvd I like that doesn't have a lot of jumping is the now 'old school' Billy Blanks Tae Bo. Pretty intense cardio with some footwork, but not nearly to the level of the jumping on Insanity.

I have a similar problem, and like one of the other posters, I also find that too much 'heavy' movement tends to make the room shake and things fall off (the floorboards were probably put down by the same cowboy who did the windows, didn't put a support in and now the bricks are shifting )
Anyway, I try to modify workouts by substituting things like quick squats for jumps, shaking my hips side-to-side for jogging/marching, and i emphasise the arm movement or do it double-time to keep my heart rate up. Doesn't work for every workout style, but it helps. I also use the wii fit - I just try to tread carefully rather than landing with a thump - better for the knees as well!

I have a small living room, and I bought an exercise bike a few years ago at Walmart.com that was small and very quiet. I can't remember which model it was, but that might be a possibility to consider.

Maybe yoga or pilates would be good choices for you. Granted, you're not going to get the same kind of calorie burn in the same amount of time, but still a workout and definitely quiet. But I agree - talk to the neighbor and see if they can give you time frames that the jumping won't be a problem. It's not like you are going to be doing so all day long. Just 30-60 minutes per day. So there should be at least a few windows of opportunity through the day.

As someone who lives downstairs, good for you for being such a considerate neighbor! However, if there's something you really want to do that would make some noise, I don't think you should let them stop you. If my upstairs neighbor came and knocked on my door and said, "Hey, I'd really like to start exercising at home, but I think it's going to make some noise. Are there any times like the baby's naptime that I should avoid so I don't disturb you?" I would be absolutely blown away with how considerate they were. (Instead, my neighbors just pound on the floor all the time!) If they're snobs about it, well, you don't owe them 24/7 silence, and you pay rent too.

I live in a 3rd floor apartment (this is my second one, lived in a 3rd floor apt in Maine, too). In Maine it was harder, not a lot of room, and I wasn't comfortable jumping around, but I was able to do Wii games.
Here, I have more room and jumping around isn't an issue as much - I know when my downstairs neighbors are home and I try to work my workouts around them as to not to disturb them - I dance and do basic ST whenever, but do the harder jumping around stuff when they are gone.

Really depends on how your building is constructed. I live in a quadruplex, and soundproofing is virtually non-existent. Any form of exercise DVD or home workout program is essentially out - not only do I disturb my neighbors, but the floors in this lovely old building will make all of my pictures on the wall vibrate if I do so much as a jumping jack. So, I have to go outside or do sit ups - stationary activities at home. The stairs in my building are out because they echo but, I can do calf raises on them without disturbing my neighbors

I'm just wondering, since you live upstairs is there any chance you could run the stairs for cardio? Are they outside or inside the building? If inside then you should be able to do that (if outside then snow & ice could be a problem). Anyway, good luck!

Congrats on being the considerate neighbor we,all would like to,have! If you want to find out a better,time to do noisy things without actually face to face talking to your neighbor how about sticking a note,on their door when you leave for work one,day? Ask them is there are times the kids are napping that they would prefer you not do a jumping work out and other than those time or very early in the morning or late at,night you shouldn't have any complaints from,them. You can ask in the note,thatmthey just write their answer and leave you the note on your doormformwhen you get home.
As to workouts, as noted LesliemSansome has several that use weights and bands but if your are considering insanity you may find them too tame so you may just have to modify your workout a bit. How about buying some padded mats to put down in your workout area? It will help reduce the impact on your knees as well as muffle any sound.

I live in an apartment as well, on the 5th floor. For exercises I do at home I just use the Wii for Wii fit or Zumba - the noise is very minimal. You can do basic running, step, hoola hoop and barely make a sound and you work up a sweat. I was doing this religiously 30-45 minutes almost everyday for 3 months and had lost 20 pounds. When you're watching tv you can simply put on the basic step on the wii fit for 10 or even 30 minutes and just step. It's great IMO.

I don't live in a complex, its a private house with an apartment upstairs and an apartment downstairs. My apartment is very small, and unfortunately there is no room for equipment(unless i get rid of my sewing machine...which i will not be doing haha). A gym in the same chain as mine is opening a little closer to my house, so i might start using that one.
To put it lightly, i am horrified by the amount of rudeness and disrespect that me neighbors show with their noise level. I think that is why i am having such a hard time thinking its OK to jump around. I just cant imagine...
Anyways, i found a few workouts that i can do at home, ill just sub the jumping jacks and butt kicks for some other less bouncy things

Are you paying for the gym membership that you're not using? Is there a gym closer to home that you wouldn't have to use as much gas? If you ARE paying for the membership, maybe use that money for home equipment instead?

Does your apartment complex have a small gym or something similar that you could use? I've seen people at the gym in my building doing P90X on their iPad. That way they can jump all they want and they have access to weights and mats, etc. I've thought about doing that myself.

Most apartments have the same setup, so if you're in your living room, you're probably above their living room too. Have you tested out jumping around in the apartment? It actually doesn't have to be as loud as you think. I have to land softly when doing jumping jacks or high knees because the wire to the tv will come loose with too much movement and cause the screen to get static. Skip the workouts with multiple minutes in a row of jumping if you're really concerned, but I would go ahead and do the 1-2 minutes of it required in the circuits.

I have small condo w/others living here, so have to be extra quiet when I get the chance to work out late at night, but I have a couple of weights and a band to do quiet things like squats, crunches, and various exercises. An elliptical and a side stepper are my cardio routines. There are lots of exercise options on SP that don't require bouncing around, and I list a group of them so I can choose what I can do given the hour and the opportunity. A pair of headsets keeps my energy and motivation up so it doesn't get boring.
I have had small children living above me and believe me, they seem to have NO trouble bouncing and running around their floors (and a yappy dog, too!). You may be feeling more self conscious than you need to about the noise you produce. It's part of the territory. There's a difference between incidental noises and purposeful annoyances.

I live downstairs, and I can say at least for me, as long as people aren't jumping up and down before 6 am or after 10 pm, I dont care. My upstairs neighbors wrestle until 3 in the morning, though. That sucks.
Have you seen Oxygen magazine? They have tons of routines that do not require any jumping lots of hand weights and resistance bands though. Some resistance bands even come with videos. Or maybe a kettle bell workout I saw one at Target the other day that came with a video and I would assume no jumping except maybe during the warmup but you can always just march in place or sidestep or move your arms a lot during that part of the video.

i live in an upstairs apt and i try not to jump.I just dance,like bobbing my head,moving around,moving all my body muscles and stuff.Im kinda close to the neighbor below me and she just watches tv alot and its up alittle sound so she probably cant hear me.And we have a rule to be quiet after 10pm hereno vaccumming loud music etc.

I wouldn't sweat about jumping up and down. I'd do it anyways, because it's all about making sure that you get fit and healthy. I'm sure there have to be times when the kids aren't napping and it's OK to move around your apartment like a normal human being.
But then again, when it comes to exercise and health, I'm a pretty selfish woman anyways...after all, I'm the only one that is making sure that I'm healthy 24/7!
I will say that I'm glad I no longer live in Upstate NY though...5 days of winter up there is all I can stand anymore! Will be nice to see my family in December, but will be nice to get home too!

These are all great suggestions! I do have a gym membership, but it takes about 15 minutes to get there, and i need to drive through rush hour traffic. With the gas prices over $4 here in New York, the gym looks less and less appealing every day.
I was thinking of buying one of those mini steppers! Ive seen them a few places, they seem like a cheaper alternative to a large piece of equipment.

Most strength training videos won't require any jumping (except maybe in the warm up), but it is harder to find cardio videos. You could try Walk Away the Pounds with Leslie Sansone. It is pretty low key, but the movements are big which will get your heart rate up. But to be totally honest, if you really want a good workout you probably will need to talk to your neighbors, join a gym or get some excercise equipment. You could try buying a mini trampoline which won't make much noise and is pretty cheap. You could also try a mini stepper which can get your heart rate up without too much noise. I also live in an upstairs apartment, but I just work out anyway. I haven't had any complaints.

I also live on the second floor of an apartment in upstate, NY and I know exactly what you mean! The day it becomes Autumn it immediately brings the cold weather along and all you want to do is work-out at home. While I don't have 2 babies downstairs, I do have an elderly woman and her caretaker who works the nighshift and sleeps during the day!!! I made sure to create a great relationship with the both of them and I spoke with them about what my husband and I would be doing. I did not ask permission or seek their approval, I simply let them know that it would be happening and we would do our best to keep it down.
Whie I understand you're hesitance to bring the matter up, it's better than not getting to try new things or worry what they'll think. Try and have a quick chat and let your neighbor know you're looking into trying P90X. (My husband and I do Insanity). Since she has small children, their naps are most likely at or around the same time each day so ask her what time that usually is and be mindful not to do these work-outs during that time frame.
Keep in mind that you pay rent and it is your home too! You have every right to jump around for an hour out of the day to create the healthy lifestyle your seeking! Try and keep your workouts at or around the same time too so it becomes a normal thing for all of you!

Actually, my neighbors and I are not friendly, and its a rare occasion they will even lift their head to say hello. I am quite passive, and not wanting to stir up any additional ill feelings, would rather not attempt to do anything jumping around.
Ill continue to look around for some better work outs for inside, i just haven't happened upon many that look effective.

Having lived below people for a long long time, let me tell you there's a huge difference to someone doing a bit of excercise and just noisy people. Some people are just heavy footed and it's annoying, others I only notice when they're doing something unusual.
Can you have a quick talk with your neighbour and ask what time the kids usually nap so you avoid those times? There are lots of chocies on the workout generator that don't involve jumping jacks....in fact I haven't come across one that does myself.

I live in a small apartment with limited space. However, that is not what is holding me back. I live upstairs and below me are my neighbors with 2 very young children(like 1.5 years and a new baby)
My sister keeps telling me to try Insanity or P90x, but jumping up an down is impossible.
Even these little 'work out from home quickly' sheets i have all call for jumping jacks or butt kicks. It would be rude and inconsiderate of me to be jumping around.
Does anyone have any suggestions of videos, or even just work outs on paper i could follow that don't require jumping? I need something to do while its raining or snowing(its coming soon, i live in upstate NY) and i dont feel like going to the gym.
