My mom had amazing results with Tae Bo years ago because she loved it. She's tried other programs since then but she didn't love doing it so she tapered off. I would highly suggest doing it since you already like it.
You could also use Sparkpeople's workout generator and their cardio kickboxing workouts to get a Tao Bo feel but with strength training. It's a common saying but I'll say it anyways, muscle burns more calories at rest than fat so putting weight training into your routine is key.
I wish you luck with your journey and I really liked Anarie's advice!
Also, talk to your son's doctors about working out a way to be able to go out. Even with asthma, they might really want him to get some time outdoors. Even a 15-minute spin with him in a stroller would be good for you and probably for him, and if you can do it twice a day, that's a half-hour walk. See if his therapists think that getting him started with little walks now will make it easier to get him into a routine for when he starts school.
My nephew is autistic, and I know how hard the need for constant supervision can be on the parents. You have my sympathies.
Burning fat is an all-body process, and you can't target where you lose weight from. Energy is delivered to the muscles via the bloodstream, NOT from being absorbed from surrounding fat stores. I think what your nutritionist is getting at is that abdominal exercises will not burn abdominal fat.
But exercise does contribute to your overall fat loss. But aim at working a much broader range of muscles in the body, rather than just the abdominals.
Exercise DVD's or videos are an excellent at-home way to exercise. Many people find dance videos to be a way to make exercise actually fun, rather than a "work"out.
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.
There is a moderately active Autism, Asperger's Sensory, Oh My! Team of very supportive ladies. I hope you come join us. It is primarily caregivers, but there are a few autistic adults that drop by from time to time.
I second that any exercise you make the time to do is a good one, but that the Walk Away The Pounds videos work well for many folks who are just starting out. My library has several of them, or some of them have been posted to Youtube.

The best exercise is the one you enjoy and will therefore keep up with, so yes, Tae Bo sounds like a good choice for you.
That said, the most important factor in losing weight is diet. If you eat at a calorie deficit, you'll lose weight. :)

Any kind of exercise you will stick with will help you lose weight. Crunches aren't really effective. I've never been fond of them anyway. Taebo is definitely one of many cardio activities that can help to lose weight. It's great that it focuses on strength based moves as well. I have some of the Taebo DVDs but I don't use them as much as I'd like, especially since I am not all that coordinated. My brother was in Taekwondo and it helped him stay fit.
Have you tried any of the workouts on this site? You could also find some workout videos on youtube and some workout DVDs at the library.
Are you doing any kind of strength training other than the crunches?
Are there any support groups for families with autistic children? If so, look to see if there are any play groups or other parents interested in getting a group together for the parents and kids to get some sort of exercise (basketball, soccer, etc.). I don't know a lot about autism.
It sounds like you are on the right track with the food by talking to a nutritionist.
I don't know how helpful I've been but I do hope that I've helped a little.
