" I suspect that SOME of our ads are selected by our interests (or at least from the words we use)"
Virtually ALL of the ads are selected that way. That's exactly how internet ad services work! They pick up keywords in what you read and what you write, and they look at the commercial pages you've used. I have Ad Blocker so I don't see any. Before I got it, I was getting Red Roof Inn ads for a YEAR because I had looked up inexpensive motels along a MapQuest route ONCE. Don't know why they couldn't figure out that I was probably done with my trip!
SparkPeople uses the same ad service that most commercial websites do. You probably see similar ads on SparkPeople, the news sites you look at, and almost any other website that has ads. It's not just your SparkPeople pageviews that determine what you see here; anything you look at anywhere can feed ads everywhere else.

I keep getting red ads of the "Parkinson's guy" which I don't understand because I never researched Parkinsons. I don't understand why he keeps showing up. Frankly, I'm tired of seeing his face!
I see them all on the pages BUT try to ignore them

Always see the Chakra one. Kept seeing an add for Body Gospel. I love contemporary Christian music and needed a something to switch up with my Zumba so I bought it. I LOVE it! Well worth the money. Now I'm checking out this Fluidity thing. Really interesting. Caught an infomericial on it the other night. Almost convinced.

I don't pay attention to the ad on SparkPeople or any other site...unless they are pop-up types that become intrusive and annoying and force me to close their windows.
i wrote a blog a month ago about my exercise equipment at home is a Rubbermaid step stool and dumbbells. Suddenly I started seeing AMAZON adds for step stools. I suspect that SOME of our ads are selected by our interests (or at least from the words we use)

Other than the ones for SparkPeople products, which we probably all get...
Currently I have:
- car ads : todays are mazda and toyota (I've done a lot of web searches for cars lately) - the Grand Palladium Jamaica and Bermuda - my vacation is next month - Red Gate software for sqlserver - I've done a lot of oracle and sqlserver searches lately - amazon.ca - I do buy from them
Do you all see these, or do we all get different ones? Just curious...
