I don't necessarily love the process, but I do love the results. Quads, biceps, and triceps are great to feel (and see). I tell people that I didn't start to lose weight consistently until I added strength training.
When we got a Bowflex. It made strength training so convenient.

When the Y taught me how to use the weight machines with a pin number and it tallies your total pounds lifted for each session, and total weight lifted over time! I've lifted well over one million pounds since I joined the Y. I also like group exercise body weight strength training, goblet squats, push ups, etc.

I wrote the original post not looking for motivation to do it in the first place, but rather hoping to find out when I will enjoy it as much as so many other Sparkers. It's true I may never love it. But I want to love it because I want to continue to incorporate ST into my life long after I'm finished losing weight. Body pump classes are what get me through ST, as I always found it boring on my own. I have also found that if I push it to the limit of what I can do with good form that it is more challenging, I sweat more and I enjoy it more. I couldn't help but notice that the tickers on this thread show an amazing amount of weight loss! That too is motivating!
My high school had just built a new training facility when I was attending, and we did a section in gym on weights. We all learned the machines and did rounds on them. It was the only thing I EVER even slightly enjoyed about gym class. Some of the boys were even impressed when I'd kill it on the leg press. That passion is the only reason I think about joining a ymca or gym, my home workouts don't have that, but cardio I would rather do on my deserted country roads or the privacy of my own home (if I have to make a special trip I won't get it done). I think about doing a refresher with a personal trainer at the local Y or a gym, or just joining the boys from work at the employee health center to get that feeling back again.

I had a few sessions 10 years ago with a personal trainer who also happened to be a female bodybuilder. She taught me 3 important things: 1) weight room etiquette, so I can confidently walk into any weight room and not fret the brawny men are staring at me because I'm doing something wrong, 2) proper form so I get the most benefit and don't work about injury, and 3) how to tailor my own routine to give the results I want. It was a great investment... still enjoy lifting.

If I recall correctly, for me it was love from the first time I tried it! It just made me feel so GOOD that no other form of exercising has never done that, while ST does it almost every session. :) I guess it's those endorphins. I on the other hand don't really enjoy running, so we are all different and it's important to find what we each enjoy doing!

From your first post, it sounds like the sense of accomplishment is what's lacking in the strength training. I found that when I started to track what I was doing and the progress I was making that my mindset changed completely, and I fell in LOVE with strength training.
I would suggest the book The New Rules of Lifting for Women by Lou Schuler. It's got routines already laid out, and lots of pictures and descriptions of the moves so it's easy to become comfortable fairly quickly. The web site has printable workout logs that I got a kick out of looking at to see how far I'd come in just a few weeks/months. Give it a try....you may never love it as much as running, but you might come to realize that the two go hand in hand.
When I started doing Chalean Extreme. She really drills it into my head that muscle will boost metabolism which will let me burn more calories. For years I have ignored strength training but I love seeing my arms get toned, muscles more defined in my abs, etc. I also love being sore the next day!

I'm with you....Body Pump is a literal Godsend for me. Before I discovered BP I was stiff, achey, lacked tone and ability to get up out of a chair without assist. Now I run up and down stairs, jump up out of my chair, and my clothes fit so much better. I'm also the only one in the office who NEVER gets sick. It's definitely good for what ails you.
when I bought my first box of weight plates, bars and weight bench. I loved it even more when I signed up for group power weight lifting classes. I love it so much that I do it 1 day a week at home...........3 days a week at group power. I love the muscles I am forming. I love it so much that I have a personal web page on bodybuilding.com. I guess I am doing so well that 6 people on bodybuilding.com are following me around to see how well I am doing.
I love doing the videos SparkPeople has on here for strength training. I think they are kind of fun, and the time flies by.

I got started with pilates and I looooove them. I also like doing total body strength training with hand weights and DVDs at home. I have never really gone to the gym and have been successful losing weight just with cardio and DVDs. There are some days I just want to do cardio because it's "easier" but I feel so much better when I ST. There are so many options, you should try until you find something you like.

Like you, I'm a runner and I love running. I enjoy the elliptical, too. Basically any cardio exercise I'm down with. I just don't like how boring strength training is. The only non-cardio thing I really enjoy is yoga and stretching. It's not really considered "strength training," but it does build muscle on a smaller scale and improves flexibility and balance. Yoga and core exercises/push-ups are as close to strength training as I can get on a regular basis.

I have recently added S/T to my cardio regimen, mainly because I want to shape up overall and have endurance when I go hiking/climbing. I always seem to suck wind when going up a steep hill, and I want to change that. It's only been a few weeks, but already my biceps are getting more fit -- I can actually feel something there. I, too, love that feeling of exhaustion/fatigue after completing my sets. It tells me I really worked hard.
I KNEW you guys would come through with the suggestions that I needed!
For those of you who are runners, I have found a Runner's ST program here on Spark. I find that when I tell myself that my ST is to help my running, I enjoy it more. Focusing on running has kept my diet in check. Really revolving this whole process around my goal to be a runner has made all of my healthy choices easier.
Part of my frustration is that I'm still over 200 pounds, so not all the muscle is evident yet. Hopefully as the weight comes off, I'll see more muscle shining through. I'm also determined to stick with it so I can accomplish several strength goals such as doing an unassisted pull-up. I appreciated the PP who suggested ST goals. The pull-up is a long-term goal and in the meantime, I need to also add some short-term ST goals.
That may never happen for you and that's OK. People tend to love and gravitate toward what is easiest for them and much of that is determined by your body's unique physiology. I love strength training because I have predominantly Type II muscle fibers and they respond well to training. I am strong and see results quickly.
However, running, which is easier if you have more Type I fibers, has been a completely different story. I've had to work so hard at it and my short little legs are so limited in their stride length. I don't love it and don't think I ever will. But, I kept at it and don't dread it and take satisfaction in what I have been able to accomplish.
I just enjoy what I can and do what I need to do. Lots of things in life we do because it is good for us, not that we want to or love it.
Just keep at it. It gets better when you feel some mastery and sense of accomplishment as well as the changes it brings to your body.
I realize I need both strength and cardio to be well-rounded, healthy and fit.
Hi, I am a runner too. ST will help your form for running. I do 3/4 ST things 3/4 times a week. Not a huge amount but enough to reap the benefits.

I'm a runner too and it took me quite some time to get into a regular ST program and I absolutely LOVE it! Like DRAGONCHILDE said, I absolutely LOVE the way I feel when I'm done and I just really can't move and I have "jello arms." My boyfriend also likes to brag about it (I'm really not THAT defined, but enough to look nice!) so that is some fun motivation ;)

I started to love it when I started keeping it to 3 days a week and started seeing new lines on my body!
I began to love it when I did it on my own terms. I began to take an active interest in my strength training, made up my own plans, and really began looking forward to doing it. Something that also makes me feel accomplished is knowing HOW MUCH I've gained in the way of strength, and also ticking off hallmarks and goals I've set for myself. Maybe you can check to see how strong you are, or how many reps of a particular exercise you can do, then make a goal to surpass that. When you do, it feels awesome!
When I realized how energetic and strong I felt afterwards. It helped that once I added regular ST to my fitness plan I was losing more inches than before.

When I realized that it was affecting every activity in my life, from bringing in the groceries to picking up the kids. And when I put on a sleeveless shirt last summer and realized that my shoulders looked smokin!
The real reason I love it, though, is the way it makes me feel. I feel powerful when I do it, I feel amazing when I'km done, and I LOVE that feeling you get while you're doing it, the burn and the fatigue.Maybe I'm weird, I dunno.
I love to run. I want to run long after I lose the weight. I thoroughly enjoy the sense of accomplishment, it helps me improve my self image, and it greatly reduces my stress.
I've been reading and participating on the Fitness and Exercise board long enough to know you guys are VERY pro strength training. How can I grow to love it as much as you do? I'm trying different exercises, both using gym equipment and my own body weight. I've gained strength and I'm convinced that it has aided my weight loss. Yet I still don't look forward to going to the gym. I want to love ST as much as running so that I can keep it up during maintenance. Any suggestions?
