Like with all things, balance and common sense need to prevail. My own personal experience has been that whatever you do routinely is what your body will want more of. Simply put, if you drink lots of water and eat several small meals throughout each day, you will become thirsty or hungry when you miss a snack, meal, or drink that have become habitual.
I used to eat very poorly and binges were common. I love water, but I never drank enough. Now, I find, that I get dry mouthed and thirsty if I don't have a water bottle on the go at all times. My stomach has become so accustomed to the scheduled snacks and meals that, I've come to notice hunger pangs at particular times of the day even if I've just eaten!! That has lead me to believe that I can't trust my hunger pangs and what works best for me is eating at regular intervals and ensuring that there are carbs and some form of protein at every meal and snack.
Though we cannot control the winds, we can adjust the sails.

I agree 100% with Unident. Most of us are overweight because our "knowing when to stop" mechanism is shot. If we were able to do that, we wouldn't be overweight, and needing to lose weight. What matters so much isn't either, really; it's that at the end of the day, you have a balanced diet within your recommended calorie range. If eating when you're hungry helps you get there, then great. For most of us, though, that's not gong to be enough. We'll either overeat or undereat. And yes, undereating is a problem, and a common one for people who are trying to diet to lose weight.

If your body was capable of adequately telling you when and how much to eat ... why are you here?
The "eat when hungry, stop when full" mantra is a good goal to work towards, but the choices we make can screw that up for us and not all of us can actually listen to our bodies at the moment. Mine constantly wants to eat, so that wouldn't work for me.
If you need to lose weight, then you haven't so far been able to do that, right? So why would it magically work now?
Sometimes you have to retrain those signals by eating an appropriate amount at appropriate times, regardless of what your body says.
Most important would be tracking your food and making sure you're staying within your calorie range. Some people may do that by only eating when they're hungry, others may do that be scheduling when to eat - it's whatever works best for you!
Do something everyday that your future self will thank you for.

I think it's a bit of both, really. Especially on weekends there are times I don't eat breakfast until afternoon because I'm not really pressed to get anywhere and I get busy with other things and just don't even think about it!
But I think it's just ensuring you get a good balance. If you're constantly not eating and constantly under calories, then you might need to just schedule a meal whether you "feel" hungry or not. If you only sometimes miss a meal or go longer in between, but still get the right range of calories and nutrition, then it's probably okay.
So I have heard conflicting answers to this in the past... which is more important? Only eating when your hungry or making sure your eating regular meals? I have a tendency to get wrapped up in my day and will often find myself eating a light breakfast (I have a toddler and a preteen...light is all I have time for) and then not eating until 1:30/2pm, and even then half the time I am not hungry its just the time I can sit down to eat because I am feeding the toddler.
