Ultimately, weight loss is about calories in versus calories out, not about what specific type of exercise you do.
And when it comes to exercise, the most important thing is that you do it regularly. And from this perspective, I think it makes sense to pick something you enjoy.
What is enjoyable depends very much on the individual.
Some people love the social aspect of a group fitness class at the gym eg. Zumba. For others, working out in front of other people is their worst nightmare.
Some people like the controlled environment of gym equipment (eg. treadmill, elliptical), while others dislike the repetitive nature of gyms and very much like running/walking/cycling outside.
Another favorite for many are exercise videos that they can do in the privacy of their own home.
Just pick something that sounds enjoyable to YOU, as this makes it more likely that you will stick with it in the long term.
About the only thing to watch with exercise is that you include both cardio AND strength training in your overall program. Weight Loss starts in the Kitchen.
You should do any kind of exercise that you like, whether it be walking or dancing or ellptical or Biking. Just find an activity that you like and can keep doing

The answer varies from person to person. Any exercise that you will do consistently is the best on for you. For me, it's walking.

I enjoy walking and riding my bike. So, I found things that complement both - running, rowing machine, and elliptical.
