@Patti - well, if it's Derby Day you MUST have some Derby Pie! That should be enough sugar to last a month or so. (to my untrained palate, it tastes like pecan pie with chocolate chips). And don't forget your mint julep (with more SUGAR!)

It really is hard for me to eat a "HEALTHY" diet all of the time, due to so many temptations. Comparing it to an alcoholic would be a fair judgement, in the sense that processed foods, AKA tasty foods are so addictive and so tempting. I mean just about every entertainment venue associates eating, for example, going to a baseball game, my first thought is "hot dogs, peanuts and cracker jacks, I don't care if I never get back, and it's root root root for the hometeam....." Also, the cheapest form of entertainment for me and my family is just going out to eat at a great restaurant and enjoying what I'm eating. I really hate salads, unless I put a bunch of junk on them to make them tasty. You know?

A healthy diet for me is eating a ratio of 55% car, 25% pro and 20g of fat. Now that being said, strokes run in my family so I am highly aware of keeping my sodium levels at aroun 1900 mg per day.
Yet I dont' starve myself or limit what I eat....I eat in moderation but dammit if I want a cheeseburger...I'm gonna have a cheeseburger. Everything works out in the end but I do track every bit of food that goes in my mouth and have for a long time.
I find if I don't actively purchase my arch enemies ie. chocolate of any kind, it is much easier to stay on track.
@TD and Obie -- I'm laughing so hard. Don't forget Derby Day! I make a special day out of the Kentucky Derby too, plus many of the ones you mentioned. How about Pancake Day?! It's a real thing! We need to let go of some of these special days, but........At this time, I am laughing my head off since April is National Humor Month, I'm writing a poem for National Poetry month (while eating Pecans since it's National Pecan Month), all while trying not to be stressed out (since it's also Stress Awareness Month).
Now, let's celebrate all those wonderful things! What's everyone making for dinner?

For me I like The Mediterranean Way of Eating and Lifestyle and the food is not boring. It actually has a variety of different foods because the countries of the Mediterranean vary on their cooking.

I think people go to the extreme and think eating healthy is boring and tasteless. They broil a skinless chicken breast and throw lettuce on their plate. I like to buy chicken thighs to have tasty dark meat, skin it myself as I leave 20% of skin on it to not feel deprived. I have a wonderful marinate that is very healthy. You can even have pizza if you make it yourself. It can be very healthy.
I am fortunate that I love fruits and veggies and can no longer stand the taste of processed food. I think not depriving yourself to the extreme and enjoying your food and making sure it has nutritional value is eating healthy. I eat cookies but I make them myself in a healthier way than I can buy in the store. Yesterday I made oatmeal cookies with walnuts, used apple sauce instead of oil. Delicious and don't feel deprived.
Not to be too serious on what's meant to be a lighthearted thread, but...
Asking "What is a healthy diet?" is a lot like asking, "What is a moral person?" We all pretty much agree on a lot of things that are NOT, but each person has to decide what IS on his or her own. It also changes over time and according to circumstances. The reason that we crave fat and sugar and salt is that once upon a time thosee things were hard to come by, so they *were* healthy because they helped people get enough calories to maintain their weight. If we still had to hunt down, kill, dress, and cook a wildebeest to get some animal fat, we wouldn't have to worry about too much animal fat!
And in the end, there probably is no such thing as a healthy diet. There are just diets that are healthier than what we would eat if we weren't trying to be healthy. You'll never do it "right;" you just have to try always to do it better than before.

Eating healthy for me right now is avoid fried foods and soda altogether, drinking tons of water, and staying within my calorie, fat, protein, and carb limits set by sparkpeople.com. Seems to be working so far. Now all I need to do is quit drinking!

my triggers are when I'm around other people who are eating what I call normal foods, not diet anything. It puts me in a good mood to enjoy what I'm eating. My son's birthday is Monday. He will be 4 years old, and we are throwing him a party saturday. Do you think I'm serving sugarfree ice cream and sugarfree cake? Heck no, everyone wants the good stuff. Everyone says, oh, it just comes around once a year, just eat and enjoy. Yes, it does, but so does Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, Halloween, anniversaries, Fourth of July, reunions, and what else have I missed? All of that one time stuff adds up rather quickly. Oh, I forgot Arbor day! LOL!

For the popcorn lovers among us, I've found that 100 Calorie PopSecret is a great way to enjoy, and avoid much of the ancillary issues. Moreover, for some reason, it's easier to eat it of the bag (then it's larger siblings) and not dirty, yet another bowl.
Salt, however, may still be an issue for many.

I think it varies from person to person. For some, a healthy diet is to eat nothing that has eyes, for others it is to eat no meat, for me it is eating as few processed foods as possible and lots of vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains. I am trying to learn to control my portions, especially of things like spaghetti, pizza, bread. I have changed from white rice to brown. I just think that making small changes leads to big results.

Not sure how to describe a healthy diet, but I sure remember the UNHEALTHY diet I followed for 40 years.
Popcorn is a relatively healthy snack when compared to its other salty counterparts, right? TD, I totally get what you're saying. Last night, I wanted some of the microwave "movie theater butter" popcorn, and when I was done eating the popcorn, I caught myself doing one of my old habits of licking the butter-flavored salty goodness from the side of the bag. I felt kind of "high" doing it, and when I did catch myself, I was embarrassed and mortified at myself for it. I decided that I cannot, as a rule, eat a bag of microwave popcorn by myself. 1) I am battling with high blood pressure and this is one of the main reasons I really want to lose a lot of this extra weight. 2) Lots of sodium makes me retain water like the Hoover Dam. 3) I have adopted a lot of good new habits and I really do not want to fall into old, unhealthy ones.
Sometimes moderation is key. Sometimes, we have to avoid our trigger foods altogether. I think KJ's signature says it best. Go ahead. Check it out if you haven't already. A recovering alcoholic should not even keep alcohol in the house for guests-because it may set him or her off. One glass of wine can turn into several. A recovering drug addict should stay far away from areas where they know that they can score. One hit will not be enough.
My first thought is that a healthy diet contains any foods that you really have to force yourself to eat on a regular basis! :-) Seriously, though, for me, it's balancing out carbs, fats and proteins in order to keep my blood sugar down, but it also entails limiting processed, chemical-laden foods, saturated and trans fats, lots of salt and sugars, too many high-cholesterol foods, and being aware of where and how foods are grown in order to cut down on pesticides or things like mercury in ocean tuna, etc. Along with all that, I try to stay within nutritional limits, and force myself to drink lots of water.
This isn't to say that I am perfect. Although I try to follow a "healthy diet," I do splurge and go off track with foods I know I shouldn't be eating. Small amounts in moderation is OK, but I sometimes have difficulty sticking to that rule.

@Obiesmom, LOL! I think I just meant that there is no HEALTHY foods that I really crave, that's where the mysterious ingredient comes in. I'm willing to bet that THEY, meaning I don't know, put something is this processed junk food to make people want to eat it. I mean, really, why do I crave chips and sweets? I never want to dive into a plate of broccoli, or stuff my face with hummus dip. (And Jordan swings back, swoosh!)
To me, a healthy diet is a way of eating that makes me feel great:
- physically. I need to feel strong, capable of performing at a decent athletic level. - emotionally. I need to be happy with how my body looks. - digestively. I need to feel comfortable and not queasy, nauseated, heartburn, starving, bloated. - mentally. I need to feel confident that the food I'm eating is good for me, not doubting my choices. - spirtually. I need to eat food that I don't feel bad about how it was made - whether that be animal cruelty or bad environmental practices or whatever. - financially. I need to be able to fit my eating into my general budget and not end up screwing up my whole month's finances because I want to eat imported delicacies. - culturally. I need to eat food that keeps me connected to my place of origin, where I live now, and places I am interested in learning about. - glottally. I need to eat food that tastes good, not just okay or bad. - socially. I need to eat food that doesn't make me a social pariah; it needs to be something I can eat in front of my family and friends without causing too much of a scene.
If it meets all those criteria, I imagine that whatever problems I have are not being caused by what I'm eating.

But for me... My diet consists of lots of veggies, whole grains, fruits, healthy oils, AND anything else that I want and love... Pizza, mac and cheese, cakes, pies, french fries :) I just don't eat the 'bad' stuff everyday. But I won't give them up. The good and the bad are a part of my diet :)

I don't know that I'd go that far, TD. There are LOTS of healthy foods that I love: mango, peaches, pomegranates, Greek yogurt, cheese, black beans, lentils, grilled salmon, tabouleh, hummus, etc.
that doesn't mean I don't want a big slice of bakery cake with sugary icing every once in a while, but there really are healthy foods that I crave.
and several 'unhealthy' foods that just disgust me: anything with mayo, 'country fried' whatever, mac & cheese from a box, greasy 'pan' pizza, etc. Most of these are things I have never even tried - they just seem gross to me.

Well said Sheryl, but I would have just said, "if it tastes good, spit it out!" Seriously, I would tend to believe that the majority of people do not eat this way. Come on, I would rather cut off my foot than to eat 100% like this. I grew up in a family that loves to eat. Heck, we even drove 80 miles away to eat at this great country buffet place. In our house, when we raised our elbows, our mouths opened!
I've played around with this for decades ... and for Me the answer is unlimited non-starchy veggies,. a normal amount of lean protein.. limit healthy starches & veggies (beans, corn, potatoes, quinoa, brown rice, oatmeal), limit fruit (fresh and dried).,limit healthy..fats (EVOL, nuts, etc), avoid processed carbs, avoid sugars, avoid additives and artificial stuff. bottom line...eat as close to natural as possible, watch your portions, learn the difference between hunger and craving, and be flexible.

Healthy diet is simple to understand--hard to live with all the time! :) Eat mostly fruits & veggies. Enjoy some pastas & rices...eat some lean proteins. Stay away from red meat! Drink fat-free milk for strong bones....etc, etc.
Everyone has their own ideas about healthy vs unhealthy. Do what's right for you--and keep it simple. :)
Pizzahut gives me the WORST heartburn, so fortunately, it doesn't even look good to me anymore, and I don't eat any meat other than fish anymore, so...bonus! It does seem simplistic, and it doesn't HAVE to be unappetizing. I make some pretty spectacular vegetarian dishes, and even some vegan dishes, but I'm an awesome cook. The Wegman's here has really stepped its game up with their "cafe" items, like vegetarian summer rolls, vegan California rolls, and just a bunch of really, really tasty and healthy things, so you don't have to go around the world to find a nutritious and tasty lunch that's 350 calories or less.
I hope I didn't miss the point. I'm on my first cup of coffee, have my e-textbook open, am responding to emails, am on yahoo answers, and also am available to help my daughter with her homework that her teacher gave her to do over vacation.
I think a healthy diet is just the same as weight loss, not a one size fits all approach. It's something that can be modified as you go. Different people need different diets, especially for certain health conditions. The most important things are getting all your nutrients through wise food choices and having moderation in all things. I think it's totally fine to have a little chocolate every single day (my addiction), or if somebody has to have fast food, that they do it only once in a while. Just don't overboard on anything, even if it is considered healthy.

I contest this because it's just too simple of a plan. For instance, where's the part about it's okay to eat fast food 3-4x's a week? Where's the part about how delicious bacon and eggs fried in that bacon fat are SO TASTY regardless if it's healthy for you or not? Where's the part about having seconds at dinner!?
If those 83 words are the "key" to eating a healthy diet then it's no wonder most of us choose to ignore it, it's just not that appetizing!!!!!
Note* - do you need a towel? I think I dripped some sarcasm on ya,....hahahahahaha.
Seriously though, I am just several clicks away from having that pizza delivered to my job within the hour but I'd have to drive quite a distance to get baked skinless chicken breast, a small baked sweet potato and a cup of steamed broccoli.
