It can be gross to watch at times, but also entertaining.

I wouldn't even want to be anywhere near such gluttony, oh how discomfort after eating so much in such a short time

Totally gross - the whole concept, doing it, even thinking about it. YUCK

I am fascinated that people (usually not overweight) can pack away that many wings, dogs, pies etc. and not have their gag reflex kick in. If I try to eat one additional bite when I am over full, even if I want to, my throat says, un uh and swallowing it, forget about it.

It is awesome and kind of gross to watch at the same time, LOL.

Gross but oddly fascinating. It's like a train wreck and I can't look away.

Like that one guy who usually always wins the Coney Island hot dog eating contest. Where does he put it?

oh, idk. I took part in a competitive ice-cream eating contest once. Didn't win. I had "brain freeze" so bad my throat just wouldn't swallow any more.

I don't see it the same as the sin of "gluttony". To me, that would be way overeating on a daily, continuous basis. A lot of competitive eaters aren't overweight at all. I think we all know someone who can pack away an awful lot of food, yet they're skinny as a rail.

And I daresay, overall more food is wasted in this country because people forget it's in the fridge, or buy it with intentions to "eat more vegetables" or "cook at home more" but then when it comes right down to it... don't *want to*. And the stuff goes bad & gets thrown away. To me, that's an awful lot more wasteful than someone plowing their way through a pile of pop tarts or 70 hot dogs. They've taken in enough calories, that they probably don't eat much for a few days. The food wasn't "wasted" at all. I suppose if they threw it all up after the contest, it would be "wasted". I did not throw up the ice cream I ate during that contest.... I also was not hungry for anything else to eat that day. Bad nutrition, yes. Wasteful? No I don't think so.

I find competitive eating a little gross to watch, though.

Not really a fan, it is just odd to me.

Agree about the wasted food aspect - although in America in general, the food waste is abhorrent to me emoticon

To each their own but I can't watch it and the idea of it grosses me out. I went to a redneck relay race once where one of the events was eating as many poptarts as possible in a minute or something. The guy that won this contest overall won a pick up truck (used but still a nice prize). He did great in all the other activities but never took even one bite of a pop tart. He said no way to that one. I thought that was interesting.

I'll be honest competitive eating grosses me out. Especially if its a food I dislike such as hot dogs or pie. Its a bit of gluttony lol~

I think it could be dangerous. A lot of stress on the body for those who do it.

Okay, I'm going to admit it. I find competitive eating fascinating. Don't ask me why, but I love watching Nathan's 4th of July hot dog eating contest. It flabbergasts me that there are men (and the occasional woman), who can eat 60-69 hot dogs and buns in less than 10 minutes. Sonya Thomas holds the women's record at 45. sheesh.

I know there are people who can't hold that kind of food and end up hurling it back up. But, still, it amazes me that Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi can eat that much food that fast. These are not morbidly obese men either.

Where do they put it ???? 69 hot dogs and buns is an awful lot of food.

But yes, it's true. I have watched some of the competitive eating videos posted on youtube.

considering that gluttony is frowned on as a vice
I'm surprised by how many church oriented picnics have eating competitions as part of the entertainment,

Some folks (not me) enjoy those competitions and they are a traditional & fun part of many festivals and events in the part of the world I live in.

So, to each their own.

The society to which I belong is full of lovely, intelligent and selfless people, btw.

I think it's a waste of good food. Food should be eaten slowly, savored, and enjoyed. Not to be stuffed in your face at top speed! I don't think they even taste what they are eating when they turn eating into a competition! It just can't be healthy and it's such a waste!

I don't think it can even be fun! I think it would make the competitor sick in the end!

What do you think?
