I generally don't pay much attention to the ads, except it's hard to keep your eyes off of all those wrinkly, sick looking people that keep popping us -- I don't even know what the ads are for -- just can't stand the looks of the faces! Well, if the ads are catered to me as someone else mentioned below, I think I'm in trouble!

Some advertisers pay to be on just about any site, relevant or not-- especially the scams and the ones for small purchases (donuts, fast food, etc.) As for hospice care, have you ever Googled an often-fatal illness? Ever see the name of a medication and Google it to see what it is, only to find it's chemotherapy or a treatment for COPD or something? Read any forum or blog posts (here or anywhere else) where people talk about elderly, sick parents they're taking care of? Those are the sorts of things that trigger Adsense/Google ads. And a weird part of it is that sometimes it takes several weeks before you start seeing things that are related to an old thing that you read, so you've forgotten doing the thing that triggers it.

I've had AdBlocker on my own computer for several years, so I don't see those things, and it's kind of disturbing to use someone else's computer and realize just how much the advertising has invaded.

Right! It doesn't make sense for me to get hospice care or donut ads. I don't search for these things, and they don't fit my healthy lifestyle.

Sure, I understand that keeping SP free depends on ads. But don't show me junk food.

BTW, I'm getting car ads now. And I"m not searching for cars.

sometimes the ads make sense (Publix, Zappos, Title Nine - all sites I visit)

sometimes they are rather odd (lavender donuts? vibrating exercise machines? detox diets?)

today I've seen lots of sauna, meditation, and cancer treatment...and several that are blocked by my employer (a green bar that says ACCESS TO WEBSITE DENIED) so I have no idea what those may be

Are you afraid to try or are you afraid to fail?

I have an ad blocker on my browser, so I am not seeing any.

lots of times the adserver (that is not controlled directly by Sparks) will select "personalized" ads just for you, based on what it finds in your browser's cookies. I looked up a shoe store online last week, and keep getting "shoe" ads ever since. I also get a lot of plus-size fashion ads, ads for the SPCA (ever since I looked up adoptable animals), travel ads (ever since I checked out some package deals on a travel website), and so on.

Clearing your cookies can help. For awhile there I was getting an ad about "training to be a registered nurse" with a picture of a nurse's hand holding a preemie-baby's tiny translucent foot... which tbh, I found distracting and almost disturbing... not sure what I'd been looking at that caused the ad-powers to decide I might be in line for nurse's college, but clearing my browser history seems to have taken care of that one.

I ignore them. As long as SP is free, I will roll with the punches.

I'm getting depressing ads on SparkPeople:
Hospice care
Donuts
Lands End shirts
Cell phone

OK, SparkPeople, I can understand the shirts, but what's up with Donut and Hospice ads? Do you think I'm dying for donuts?
