This is not an all or nothing diet. This is a learning process. sometimes we will over eat, be unwilling to exercise or not care enough to track. We will not be perfect. If we can do the right thing 80% of the time, though, we will win and be successful. Only one perfect person ever walked this earth and it wasn't you or me! Give yourself some slack. emoticon

Vickie,

Journal. Start every sentence with the phrase: I feel.... Next sentence starts with I feel.... Every sentence goes this way until you are done. Put a period after each sentence and start the next. I feel.... Keep going back to it. It will get you to and through things you never dreamed of. I have done it. It might work for you too.

I think we all binge at some time or another. I know I do, but not in the way or an eating disorder. It will be one day and then that's it for quite a while - I'm happy with that. Unfortunately a lot of people who binge, once they start they have a lot more than one day doing it and then beat themselves up for it :-(

Sometimes deprivation can actually cause the want to binge. If you find this is the case, then it wouldn't hurt to give yourself permission to occasionally get yourself a little treat. You mention chocolate - you could OCCASIONALLY buy yourself a LITTLE bar of good quality dark chocolate with the high cocoa %, and nibble on that. You may find that THAT is enough to satisfy your craving, and the beauty of that little serve is that once it is gone it is gone!

You CAN do this, but you need to have faith in yourself. IF you slip, don't beat yourself up - you are only human and none of us is perfect.

Hi Vickie!

Confession, but I still have to keep the trigger foods out of the house almost 8 years into my journey. I wish I could say after this length of time I can be control, but the reality I have learned what works or doesn't work for me. This is why your message is really helpful. You are beginning the process of unraveling what I call, 'the why we do, what we do, when we do it' scenario.

More times than not, binges are related more to the emotional side of life versus the physiological side, with the exception of when we allow ourselves to get too hungry between meals because we are not eating enough to sustain normal biological functions. Or if we choose foods that promote hunger, cravings and decreased energy (candies, pastries, ice cream etc).

That being said, this does not mean you can't enjoy those foods, but I recommend that you make it a special treat for you. If I really want a cookie I will go to the bakery or cookie store and buy one there. I can eat an Oreo and Chips A-Hoy anytime, but by making it a treat I keep the portions better in control and more than likely it will be tastier than the store bought ones.

Make sure you eat foods that contain some protein and fats. These foods take longer for the body to digest so that it helps with the physiological side of binges.

This is really a very complex question, with no right or wrong answer. How we look at food is individual. I will say that many women do feel a lot of "guilty" feelings when it comes to their relationship with food.

I give this piece of advice to all new members and those members who feel like they're going to lapse into less than healthy behaviors and it is this,"Don't look at good health or weight loss with an all or nothing mentality". If the only healthy thing you were to do for yourself today was to drink 8 glasses of water, that's still a step in the right direction.

Weight loss and good health are not "all or nothing". Don't try to be perfect by eating clean every day. This has taken me a long time to learn, but you don't have to be perfect to be healthy. Chocolate or fries or soda, brownies, cookies, etc... CAN all be a part of a healthy lifestyle as long as you are mindful of the portion.

Why do some people binge ? That's another complex question with no easy answer. One thing I've learned from my own experience is that depriving myself of something I really wanted to eat would cause me to overeat everything else. Had I just allowed myself a small portion of whatever the something was, I wouldn't have over eaten later.

When I decided I needed to lose weight, I knew I could never give up chocolate or cheese. I also knew I'd never be perfect. It's not impossible to eat perfectly, but it does require an awful lot of work and diligence. I wanted to be healthy, but I didn't want to be super strict about it either. And you don't have to be strict with yourself to be healthy either.

The fact is, you are not a bad person or an unhealthy one because you want to eat chocolate or any other type of treat. As long as you eat right most of the time, that's what counts. You really don't have to be perfect to be healthy. That's where I feel many people get frustrated with losing weight. They wonder why they can't be perfect. It's because no one is perfect.

I'm having some real struggles with my thoughts of food right now. I have been having these feelings of guilt for having thoughts of overindulging myself. I have managed to stay on track, but I know if I had a box of chocolates in this house, I wouldn't have a box of chocolates for much longer. I want to have anything I desire right now. Having these "old" thoughts makes me scared of this new day. I feel that I am struggling to "stay clean." This is the first time in my life that I have really worked to keep these thoughts of binging (on food) at bay. I have, in the past, just given in and had whatever I wanted until I felt so badly that I began to do unhealthful things to make up for it. I have been told many times by many people. 100 problems right now, 101 after the fact. Binging is only a bandaid. The problems will still be there plus one more--my "relapse." I am trying to stay focused on what is best for me because I know I deserve the best, but this stuff that is going on inside my is threatening my progress. I am coming out of a bout of major depression, and this could be the reason for wanting to overindulge. However, I really have never journaled about this, so it is hard to make the connection. If there is anyone out there who has anything that might help me, I'd love to hear it. I will say that being able to come here is helping to calm the thoughts. I love SP!
