Something mom called SOS, never knew why it was called that. Mom made a white sauce, added a can of peas, and ham she cut into small chunks (mostly frozen small chunks she cut away from the bone in ham after a holiday dinner and froze) cooked until hot and served over toast...taste good, looked horrible!

mom pretty much cooked the usual stuff, and never anything we didn't like. Tuna casserole was never a favorite, but I could eat it. We did have chipped beef on toast sometimes. And creamed eggs (boiled eggs, diced in some kind of white sauce).
we lived with mom's sis for a year while mom was working f/t and going to school f/t. My aunt was a good cook, but she also cooked parts (gizzards, hearts, liver, etc). We never ate 'parts'. We went into liver and onions open minded, because it smelled wonderful cooking. But it was AWFUL. My aunt's philosophy was 'eat it or wear it' so we'd cut the liver into the tiniest pieces possible, coat it in Heinz 57, and swallow it without chewing. She also made lots of stuff with mayo. Mom doesn't eat mayo, so we never did either. It's very difficult to swallow a tuna salad sandwich without chewing. I could usually keep it down long enough to get away from the table..but it never stayed down. BLEH.

My mom had a grinder, hand cranked, each attached to the edge of the table. She would grind up leftover meat from the night before on the rare occasion we had any. Mix it with mayo and pickle relish. It made a good sandwich. I loved leftover meatloaf sandwiches. They didn't happen often.

Fried bologna ROCKED !! Boy do I miss a fried bologna and egg sandwich. My mom used to make the best home fries. weekend breakfast was a piece of fried bologna, fried egg, hash out of a can and her home fries. A vaguely remember having fried SPAM once in a while. I know we used to buy SPAM.
How about canned deviled ham or chicken ? If it wasn't a tuna sandwich, it was deviled ham or chicken.
@FEDGIRL -- Very sorry, but none of those sound very good -- especially the Chung King mixed veggies.
@Ziggy -- We still make fluffer nutter sandwiches to the day, and they are only good on squishy white bread that's been toasted slightly. Yum!

My mom would take a head of iceberg lettuce and a jar of mayo and eat until one or the other were gone. She used the lettuce like a spoon.

Not my mother, but my grandmother got it into her head that I liked hot dogs sliced up and cooked with and cinnamon spiced apples. It was so disgusting, but in my family, if my dad ate it, then we had to eat it and if it was served to us at someone's house, we had to eat it.
What a shock to come home from college one Christmas and take my "three bites" of Brussel sprouts and my youngest brother pass the dish to my dad. My mom said she and he had a knock down drag out fight over the bitter veggie one night. I'm not sure who really "won" since the compromise to not eating Brussel sprouts was to eat anything else my mom cooked. My mom is a very adventurous cook.
The next shock was when I started bringing my fiance (later husband) home for dinner. My mom will actually cook him a separate dish of the main casserole without broccoli, cauliflower, creamed soups, etc. I wonder if she was so relieved that I was finally getting married that she was willing to do anything to keep my significant other happy?
Not necessarily weire, but three favorite childhood meals were:
1. Chopped meat and peas. Brown ground beef, add one can peas with juice. In the Good Seasonings salad dressing carafe, mix two tablespoons flour and fill up with water. Mix in the meat and peas. Wait until thickened. Spoon over mash potatoes (or her fav bread). Carb heaven!
2. Slop - ground meat, tomato sauce, and elbow macaroni (now known as American Chop Suey).
3. Leftover roast beef got cut and mixed with Chung King Chinese Veges and Sauce.
4. Kraft Spaghetti and Meat Sauce. Just add meat and tomato sauce. Everything else was in the box.

My mum bought a whole pigs head from the butcher and made brawn. I've no idea how she made it but, since I've no intention of ever eating brawn again, it doesn't matter that I don't know how to make it!
SOS and Egg-In-The-Middle (as we called it) were favorites too. I also once saw the same version called Hole-In-One (I guess for the golfers out there)! My mom cooked only a few recipes well -- the rest of what she made was questionable. My dad was the cook in the family -- I learned a lot from him.
Mom would fry thin pork chops in a pan with mustard smeared all over them -- they were always like leather, and no-one liked them. Another was chicken soup -- delicious but with the whole chicken and all the bones in it that needed picked out at the table. And although I like them today, when I was a kid, I couldn't stand the stuffed grape leaves with foamy lemon sauce on the top. Oh, oh, oh . . . and the dish of all dishes was her creamed spinach (which was like thin, slimy soup. I never warmed up to good creamed spinach to the day. I spent many hours in front of my dish that I was required to at least taste, and I couldn't do it after the first time. It turned my stomach!
We laugh about and compare what our parents used to cook and do often. So, I'll be following this thread with anticipation!
Kidney stew, blood sausage, beef and kidney pie were treats and I loved them. I also loved beef tongue. The pickled brains and lambs tongue were not a favorite. Sauerbraten (beef cooked like pot roast only in vinegar) I still dislike. Hossenpfeffer (rabbit) was delicious. As you can see, by these, I grew up on a varied diet that I still don't consider weird as they are foods eaten regularly by my ancestors and family including steak tartare (raw hamburger on bread with raw onions etc) another favorite.
The only thing I consider weird (and did not then) was made for me by my grandmother. Rye bread with lard spread on it, then sprinkled with salt. This is also a common food in some areas when you are poor and hungry. Oddly it did taste good.

My mom used to put mayonnaise of just about everything. One thing she would make is cooked beets. After they cooked she would drain them and mix them with mayo. My brothers still eat their beets this way. I liked it growing up, but don't eat them like this now.
Another she made was macaroni and cheese with cut up hot dogs. We loved this! She would put sliced tomatoes on top, sprinkle with breadcrumbs, and bake. So good.

I loved fried bologna when I was little. We had the gravy with chipped beef a few times too. She also made golden rod eggs, I always thought she was saying golden rot eggs. I think she must have hard boiled the eggs, separated the whites from the yolks, chop the whites and cream them. Put it on toast and sprinkle crumbled egg yolk on top. It was good and very pretty. Spam sandwiches, were also a favorite back in the day. My mom was a good cook and always had a lot of variety, personally cooking 3 meals a day for 10 people seems like a full time job to me, add in all the laundry and cleaning and etc, I don't know how she survived.
My Mom used to make "prawn on toast" all the time when I was a little kid.
She will chop up pork, prawns, onions, spring onions and I don't know what else, emulsify it with some raw eggs, cut bread into little squares, put the prawn concoction on it and fry it. I loved it! I still do, but now that we're both trying to eat healthier and lose weight, she's stopped deep frying.
We had egg in a hole as well. I thought SOS was what my mother referred to as creamed chipped beef (dried beef that comes in a glass jar at the grocery store in a basic milk gravy on toast). My dad made strange concoctions for himself with ramen noodles and whatever was in the fridge, but we would not eat those. I can see recreating a real ramen dish, but emptying the fridge into it was just unappetizing.

The only thing that sticks in my brain is the tim my mom made turkey legs. Only they didn't turn out right; they were rubbery. To this day, I cannot eat turkey legs and can barely stand to see them. Mostly though, she was a decent cook

I LOVE fried bologna! Still make it occasionally, although my kids won't eat it. My Mom used to take the tiny loaves of cocktail bread, put hamburger on top of it and bake it and...never had a name for it but I wasn't fond of it. And considering we were a family of 11 that was a LOT of tiny little bread/hamburger things to make... I think the only thing that I love that might be classified as a little strange is I LOVE mac & cheese with beef gravy on it. Don't judge me! Try it! Yummmm....
"Sh## on a shingle" is WW2 Army jargon, from the same guys who taught us snafu. I can't remember if FUBAR is also WW2, but I think not; I think it's from Vietnam, which is why snafu is spelled like a regular word but FUBAR is still an initialism.
My mom didn't make much that I thought was weird, except that she put jelly on bologna sandwiches. Dad, on the other hand, will eat any part of an animal. Pork brains were one of his favorite things back when you could get them easily. Mom refused to have anything to do with them-- he had to cook them himself after she had already finished her meal and left the house, and he had to air the place out before she came home so there was no odor left. (Honestly, they don't smell that bad, but it's just the thought.)
When I was about 6 years old, my grandmother somehow got it into her head to give me blood sausage for lunch. She was one of those "you will sit there until you eat it" disciplinarians, and I was just about the stubbornest kid in the county. She served it at 11, and I was still sitting there weeping at 5:00 when my grandfather's cousin stopped in to visit. She saw what was going on, and she asked my grandmother to show her the sewing project she was working on. As soon as Grandma left to go get it, the cousin said, "I *love* blood sausage, and I'm so hungry! Could I have that?"
My mom's weird childhood dish was hot dogs, sliced lengthwise, filled with spuds & cheese, wrapped in a slice of bacon, more cheese. Bake that until the bacon's done, put in a bun.
We loved it, of course. I did actually learn good eating habits from my mom, this was a very seldom treat!

@DRAGONCHILDE, my mom used to make meatloaf too, but with marinara sauce in lieu of ketchup and we loved it. She used to make english muffin pizzas a lot too (no that that seems overly weird to me, but I haven't had them in years).

My husband loves fried bologna... the smell of it makes my stomach churn. I seriously laughed at s#it on a shingle. LOL.
One thing my mom used to make was meat loaf with sour cream instead of ketchup. It was SO good.
My mom use to make what she called egg in a hole which was a piece of bread with a hole in it from a shot glass and then crack an egg in the hole and toast the little round piece in the pan while frying the egg the dish of course was called "EGG IN A HOLE". The next dish was hamburg with gravy with some onions, then she'd toast bread and she called that "SH#T ON A SHINGLE". She use to fry bologna that didn't have a cute name as the other two hahaha but when I talk about fried bologna people say WHAT?????????????? FRIED BOLOGNA? YUCK HAHAHA What about you do you have any childhood dishes that mom made that had weird names to them?
