I'm continuing to aim to burn more than I eat. I think I may have been overestimating the calories I eat, which is helpful as I struggle to keep down to my upper guideline. I discovered today that in the last week I have lost 1.5 kilo and 1.5 inches around my waist. My body has obviously been reacting to unaccustomed exercise, so will presumably not continue to burn so many calories. I've also just noticed I'm exactly half way through to my weight loss goal. I'm encouraged! I now want to learn to minimise weight gain over holidays, staying with friends, travelling etc. I think my attitude is changing. I joined SP for the weight loss, but am mnow excited about the exercise, which no longer feels like punishment.
Thank you for your reply. That made a lot of sense and I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I would like to lose 30 pounds by June. In 2012 I lost 40 but I had a personal trainer that pushed me through.

I aim for a measly 1000. I love cardio, but as a student, I don't have a lot of time to go to the gym, and I'm trying to focus more on toning up instead of just weigh loss

planning to burn at least 300 calories a day through exercise... I'm more concerned with altering my poor eating habits and taking in enough water.

I'm aiming to burn more than I eat. It's difficult over the New Year period when people give you bakllava, but even now I've just succeeded most days. New Year's Eve I didn't achieve it. I'm aiming to weigh the same at the end of January as I did on Christmas Eve, and think I may be already there (it's too cold to weigh myself without my layers of clothes more than once a week!). Today I've burned 1721 cals, which is maybe 200 more than I am likely to eat. Tomorrow we have our annual meal out from church, so I shall be eating more than I am likely to burn. I went up the mountain this afternoon and it's triggered the happy hormones. Weather permitting I intend to go up there again before church tomorrow and the big meal afterwards.
Think not "how much should I burn". Instead, think "given that I burn xxx, how much should I eat". That is the right question.
It is recommended for healthy adults on average to get 30 minutes of daily activity. So aim for 30-60 (you're trying to lose weight, so a little more can help) daily. Track that. Whatever that burns, that's how much you personally should burn per week. Then set a realistic per week weight loss goal and the site will tell you how much to eat.
