Two buffets this weekend. Gained two pounds. When will I learn?

I also have weekend blow-outs (over 3000 calories of food and alcohol on Saturday) so know that you are in good company.

Don't think of it, though, as undoing all the good things that you've done during the week. Downing that Friday beer isn't going to undue the cardio and strength improvements you've made over the week or add back calories you cut from your diet other days. Sure, going over your calorie range a couple days is going to slow your weight loss progress, but no one is perfect.

If you want to be really optimistic you could even think of it as a metabolism-boosting, calorie-cycling shock to the system.

Maybe a new type of congratulatory drink is needed. Smoothies, Juicing or fused water can be nice alternatives.

Thanks all. For me the hard part about weekends is I often like to have a drink to "congratulate" myself on surviving the week. This usually leads to more drinks and bad food choices. Also, I usually cook bigger family meals on the weekend because we are all home whereas during the week I can get away with eating my own small meals.

Hopefully you have people there with you who support you. But don't forget that we're here for you, too!

I suppose it would be helpful to know just where you "undo" what you've done over the weekend.

Is it lack of exercise? Snacking? Eating out?

There are different ways to combat each one of those. If you don't mind sharing a little more detail, maybe you'll get specific ideas (beyond the tips which Coach Nancy so awesomely posted below).

Hi HURDLEDUCK,

Welcome to the SparkPeople family! As you so wisely pointed out, all your hard work done Monday through Thursday can literally be undone Friday-Sunday so coming up with a plan which includes action steps is one way you can move at changing this common problem for many.

One of the biggest factors when it comes to the weekends is many times we are out of our normal routines of sleeping and eating and these two things coupled with social obligations can certainly be an obstacle. But planning your meals ahead of time may be one way you can handle the weekend.

Welcome and good luck. Remember slow and steady wins the race. Weekends we seem to have social events ( always including food) so I work hard to balance it the rest of the day.

This is my first week on this site and I am hoping the support and accountability of a group/community will help me be successful in losing the weight this time. The problem for me is that I usually do pretty well Monday-Thursday but when Friday comes around it is a slippery slope and by Sunday I have undone all the hard work of the week. I need help staying motivated to stay on plan even when my schedule is different on the weekends. What do you do to stay on goal during the weekends?
