My 18-month old son has never had anything to drink but water and milk (he refused fruit juices) and he's perfectly happy with his "Cuppy" full of water. I, on the other hand, am also a Diet Coke addict, and I buy the 44-oz fountain drink from the gas station at least once a day.
I swear my son knows better than I do. He knows the word "Coke" and last week I made the casual statement that "I should get off Coke. It's really bad for you." Well, we sat down to dinner on Tuesday, and he kept trying to put his "cuppy" in front of me. I had my fountain coke on the table, and he kept trying to push it away. Finally he just looked at me and said "Mommy no. Bad." and pushed his cup into my lap saying "Mommy cuppy."
I translated this to mean " Mother, you know soft drinks are bad for you, and I love you so much I am willing to give you MY water."
So since Tuesday night, I've been off soft drinks. My son reminded me that I'm his role model, and I wouldn't want HIM eating junk and drinking junk, so why should I do it myself? If he can live without soft drinks, so can I.

Gave up soda a long time ago and don't really miss. Occasionally I'll have a Dr. Pepper but not really hooked on them anymore. Really don't miss the caffeine either!!

I just make sure I have a glass of water in front of me at all times, and it is easy to drink 9 or 10 glasses of water a day, I am much thirstier than I used to be

Good evening everyone,
I weened myself off of soda by starting to just have one soda when I ate my dinner/supper in the evening. That's how I started. I haven't drunk soda in almost two years. Once you can get yourself off it it's gets easier. I can't even think of drinking soda now - the thought of it is just too thick and syrupy. I do have my cup of coffee in the morning, but no soda anymore. I'm really happy I quit drinking it. If I can do it, anyone can!!!

I was a Diet Pepsi addict. I HAD to have one every morning, after I woke up. My hubby and I finally weaned ourselves away from it and now we drink flavored water. We both have our favorites. My current favorite is pink grapefruit.
I too was a diet soda addict. Diet coke and diet dr. pepper. The people at the closest drive through McDonalds knew my name. Its been two weeks and I'm doing pretty well. I'm still adding some crystal light to water occasionally, but not as much and I'm doing ok. It was the headaches for me. I'm over those too.
I'm working on switching out. As much as I like water, I still crave the sweet sometimes though.

AS a child, I was called a "water baby" because I loved to drink water of anything else. In my teens I got into the Soda thing, but realized it wasn't quenching my thirst. To this day, I prefer water over soda, but admit that when I get a yen for it, I will have regular....not diet....and I only drink about half. Glad I have this going for me! Bottoms UP
I spent my whole childhood, teen years, and most of my 20's sucking down diet soda like I would shrivel up and die without it. My grandmother swore by diet coke (vs. regular) and I got hooked on it when living with her as a child. I always thought I was so much healthier because I didn't have a bad soda habit. I was always in good health, and didn't have any weight problems until after my first child was born. My blood pressure was so low my whole life that the machines would not register it and it had to be taken manually (the doctors used to kid that I had the BP of a dead person!). It usually stayed in the 90/60 range. However, after the birth of my second child, and gaining 100 pounds (that will do it) and a lot of stress from illness in my family (my father had a stroke, a year later was diagnosed with cancer, had an operation to remove it, and then had a heart attack a month later, all recovery while living with me) my BP spiked to about 140/90 (VERY high for me). I watched a Dr. Oz show that suggested the artificial sweeteners could be to blame and decided I did not want to have a stroke like my father! At that time, I stopped by Circle K for a super-big gulp (64oz) 3 times a day for my diet coke habit. I quit cold turkey about 7 months ago. I didn't know if i could do it, but I was determined, and a after a few days, it really wasn't hard anymore. What they say is true, you stop craving the sweet. Sodas just don't taste that refreshing anymore. Every once in a while, I will get a diet coke in a restaurant with my meal, but I don't even finish it before i want to switch to water. I still carry a Circle K Super-Big gulp cup around with me, day in and day out, but now it is full of water! The insulated cups keep it cold! I just wanted to let anyone who reads this (no matter how bad your diet coke habit is, because I have never met anyone whose habit was worse than mine) that not only is it possible, it becomes easy, and you will start to crave water! By the way, my BP is down to about 110/70 now! Good luck to all!
