she will reset her metabolism by doing this and will regain the weight quickly as others have said. Fasting can lead constipation, dizziness, headaches and much more. The immune system suffers when attempting this...cutting calories and planning a healthy diet like Spark is a healthier solution.
I don't believe in going below 1200 calories a day, ever. I tried going very low cal and low carb before I knew better and almost passed out driving over an 8 lane 2 mile bridge with my son in the car with me (not to mention all the other cars on the bridge who were in danger). It was the most frightening few minutes of my life and a lesson I will never forget. Our brains need calories and carbs to function. Please tell your friend to be careful.
If she can maintain 0 calories for 5 days, why can't she eat 1500 every day? I love how people who can't control themselves to eat 1500, all of a sudden can eat 0 calories for most of a week. If they simply used that willpower every day, they could reach a healthy weight eating a decent amount of food.

Have her watch a few episodes of Survivor to see what the effects of not eating for days has on their bodies. Players have been removed from the game because they physically and mentally couldn't handle the deprivation.
By fasting for 3-5 days for quick weight loss, she'll end up screwing up her metabolism (it's probably already messed up if she's done this before). Nothing slows down your metabolism like jumping from one extreme fad diet to another. She needs to educate herself about proper nutrition and stop being in such a hurry to drop the weight. She didn't gain it overnight, she's not going to lose it that fast either.

Not only is there a lot of health risks, its only a temporary weight loss. You will gain everything back the minute you eat something.

This sounds like a dangerous thing. Have you told her about Sparkpeople? The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to develop a healthy lifestyle through food (80%) and exercise (20%)

Dragonchilde took the words right out of my mouth. If it "worked" in the past, why is she doing it again? Not eating is the fastest way to lose weight (ask any of those starving kids on the commercials). But it's not healthy and it won't last. Because as we all know, as soon as she starts getting really hungry she will become more vulnerable to giving in and eating that junk food. Plus, at the end of those 3-5 days what has she learned about having a healthier lifestyle? Nothing. So she'll go right back to the bad eating habits and sedentary lifestyle she had before. I keep reminding myself of a quote I read once, "You don't get what you want; you get what you worked for." If she's not willing to put in the work, she's not going to get the results.

Years ago, I dealt with an eating disorder. Temporary water fasts were the sort of thing that seemed perfectly reasonable to me at the time. A whole lot of things seemed reasonable, though, even though they weren't. Only passed out once this week? Yay! Starving sucks, in every way conceivable. It takes its toll on your body, but it's even rougher on your mind.
I'm not saying that your friend has an eating disorder, but her eating is definitely disordered even if it is triggered by the all-too common "quick-fix" mentality rather than genuine anorexia. She's starving herself. It doesn't matter how many supermodels or famous yogis have done it "successfully." It doesn't matter how many times she's done it in the past without obvious signs of illness. It's starvation, it's dangerous, it's foolish, and it's 100% unnecessary. Depending on how much she has to lose, she could lose the same amount of weight in close to the same amount of time (while keeping her brain, bones, muscles and metabolism healthy) just by focusing on positively nourishing foods in the proper quantities, and adding a bit of cardio. If she is very close to her ideal weight, it might take longer...but it will be infinitely safer and a whole lot more enjoyable.
There's not a whole lot you can do except tell her that there are better ways, and work to be a positive example of how healthy eating works. Because it really does.

I'm not sure what you are asking about? Only drinking water for 3-5 days can bring about weight loss (1 1/2 to 3 pounds); yet in a very dangerous way. Also weight gain will occur as your friend returns to her typical eating plan.
You can also lose weight by cutting off body parts. Amputation is very effective for weight loss, and it's more permanent than starvation. And it makes just about the same amount of sense. Your friend is damaging her organs in return for losing a few pounds for a few weeks. Might as well chop off a foot.
Just to put it into perspective, starving a prisoner for that long would be a war crime and get you executed. It's considered more heinous a torture than waterboarding, because there's a much greater potential for permanent damage. Why do something to yourself that would be a capital crime before the World Court if you did it to someone else?
Sounds like she is looking for a quick fix. I don't believe in quick fixes. I can probably give you every platitude known to man and this site-- you didn't put the weight on in one day, don't expect to lose it in one day, detox diets don't work, diets don't work, everything in moderation (my least favorite and a lie) etc.
Almost sounds like her health isn't all that important to her. For me-- my health is number one. I am not here to lose weight. I am not here to get "skinny" or "thin". I am here because my healthy and achieving 100% function of body, mind and spirit is the most important thing to me. When I hear about people going on these Fad diets or listening to Dr. Oz, or (sorry for this one) going to complete strangers for medical advice I just want to gag.
I have no problem doling out advice on how to clean out a fridge or sharing recipes. I have no problem sharing with people what rules I follow and what foods I eat as long as they understand that is how it works for me, i am not ever saying that someone has to follow my path.
my hope is that you are smarter than your friend and love yourself lots to ever do something so dangerous.
You're exactly right - it sounds terrible because starving yourself is a bad idea! As you know from being here, easing in to a healthy lifestyle by making better choices is the way to do it, and starving oneself or eating only X to "jumpstart" a diet doesn't work and can have negative side effects.
If it worked for her in the past, why does she need to do it again? Because her changes weren't long lasting and therefore didn't work.
Yes - It's called starvation! Obviously you will lose weight if you have NO NUTRITION entering your body. But, you will also lose muscle (your heart is a muscle too) and lower your metabolism and not get any nutrients, may get some electrolyte imbalances (sodium, potassium), low blood sugar, weakness, not to mention being really really hungry, lol...bad idea.
