I have a family owned grocery store and a dollar general a little over 1 mile away so I was frequently walk to either one to pick up a few different items and if the Mom and Pop store wasn't so expensive I would definitely get myself one of those carts and get all my groceries there.

Not a reality for me. Nevertheless, I almost always work to consolidate my trips.
I live in a rural location and it isn't even safe to bike for pleasure (w/ cars & semi-trucks zipping @ 50+ mph) & no shoulder (just deep ditches). -- Both the distance and shopping for a family does not make any of it conducive to walking or biking!

I am glad I posted this in a forum! I am going to get myself a backpack and start walking to my close grocery store (2 or 3 miles away)... I will work up to the other one.

For two weeks, I had no car and had to walk everywhere. I lost more weight than I ever did before! It was fantastic!

JDMAKEIT2HOT: Yes, I have been doing that for several years now. For me, it is a 1.6017 mile round-trip walk to and from the grocery store. I have a spreadsheet made where I used the Google pedometer gmap to record accurately all my trips to and from places like Dollar General, Casey's, the truck stops, bank, etc. Most of my walking paths/journeys have been recorded in that spreadsheet, so I know accurately how far I walked and can easily time it. I definitely include these errand walks in my daily exercise totals.

love your question as I walk every where I go. I left at 11:30 today to walk to the bank then I headed up the hill for a dr's appointment. when I reached the dr's office it was 1 in the afternoon. I love walking to run errands. It adds to my workouts.

My store is only about 4 miles away, so a total of 8 miles roundtrip. I regularly bike, not walk, to and from the store on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. It allows me to fit in more movement in my day and I have more time those days since I work a compressed 4 day work week. I like that I have a purpose to the ride so it doesn't feel like more "forced" exercise.

I'd do it but it is 2 to 3 miles away. It's really not that far to go, but I'd have to cross a busy highway. It's not worth the stress of going. I have walked to the grocery store before (I went with my dad when I was in high school, it snowed, and we couldn't get out of the driveway. So, we took several bags and some book bags. My brother was too little to walk that far). I could probably ride my bike there and back, but again, the traffic is an issue. Maybe one day I will live in a place where I can ride my bike to the store.

my closest store is 800 m away but i drive because I walk REALLY slow and if I forgot something to make dinner I need to get right home, not take 20-30 minutes to buy it.

If I just need some milk, I can walk a block to my local corner store. Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and Shaw's are about a 15 minute walk. I'd say, off the top of my head, there are probably 15+ supermarkets or corner stores in a 30 minute radius of where I live.

In short, I live in the city so I walk everywhere anyway. LOL

I did that when I was living in London. Either a backpack (make sure it fits well and has a hip belt so your hips take most of the weight rather than your shoulders) or one of those wheeled carts are great.

Yeah, but it's not that far away from me. Takes about 13 minutes there and 13 minutes home at a 3 mph pace. I walk because I don't drive but most other errands I run with my husband. I make up most of my steps hiking with my husband and kids.

Anyone walk to the grocery store? How long of a walk is it for you?

To heb its only maybe 2 or 3 miles total. To walmart its a lot more maybe 10 total. Anyways I am thinking of taking a backpack with me and just walking to the grocery store when I need stuff. It would save gas and get exercise in.

Anyone already do this?
