Yes, combined with eating less and better. It is a great start if you are not very fit, or do not exercise at all. It is also very motivating, and as you start walking for fitness you will find that you will walk faster and longer the more you do it. And it's so easy! No excuses, just put on your shoes, grab your music, and off you go! No driving to the gym, just walk out the door and you are exercising!

I highly recommend it! emoticon

Brisk walking for at least 30 minutes a day is a great exercise (especially if you're new to exercising!) and it does help, if you combine it with a healthy diet of course - Cutting snacks and junk food, watching on portions etc. Just exercising is no use when it comes to weight loss, if you keep on eating thousands of calories a day! Unless you exercise 8 hours a day, of course. In my own experience, it has really made a difference. It's easy, cheap, you can do any time of the year regardless of the weather, it's good for your mind too. I don't like the gym very much but I walk to work (up to 90 minutes a day) and this, plus eating carefully, has helped me lose 12 kilos in 5-6 months.

Yes you can lose weight by walking. That is how I started my journey and have built it up from there. I started out doing 15 minutes at a time then increased my route by a block or 2 each week. Also remember you have to keep your intake of calories in check. You have to burn more than you consume.

In 4 weeks I've gone from no exercise to walking (briskly) 40 minutes a day. I started slowly for a short period of time (10 minutes). I gradually increased my speed and distance. Today I started C25K (Couch to 5K). I'm was planning on walking my first 5K in November, but I think I will be fit enough to actually run part of it! At my age (65), I never thought I would be moving this much! You can find lots of good walking plans in the articles section to get you started and challenge you.

Yes, I've lost some weight, too. I'm tracking my food and I try to lose 1-2 pounds per week. So far I have lost 7 pounds, but I weigh in tomorrow and I expect to see an 8! Right on target - right on schedule!

The most important thing of all is the fact that I feel great and I sleep better!

emoticon Calories in must be less than calories you burn.. You have to burn more calories than you eat to lose weight and it goes without saying that it should be healthy foods.

Personally I have always liked brisk walks, its natural, not to stressful on the joints and cheap.
Gyms to me are to artificial.

it is great for losing and maintenance.

so simple, yet' literally one of the greatest natural movements one can do, as well as being very enjoyable, so much can be accomplished while walking deep thoughts, learning something you may want to remember just keep repeating it with focused intention and voila you not only learn the thing you wanted, but the time passes faster.

Yes! Combined with eating right and within your calorie range, it is great.

My exercise routine is 90% walking or walking videos and I am losing good amounts each week so far. The biggest advice I can give you is to challenge yourself. Set up walking goals (such as distance/speed), and keep working towards them. Also vary your routes as long as the routes are safe. These three things will keep it interesting for quite a while. I'm in my eleventh week right now of doing this and have not lost interest in my walks. It is the easiest to do sometimes because all you need are good walking shoes and an appropriate outfit.

"lose weight just by walking"?

NO. I wish. You lose weight by expending more calories than you take in. Walking alone doesn't burn a whole lot of calories. That said, walking is a very healthy exercise. I walk everyday, and it makes me fell better physically, emotionally, and mentally.

I would agree with everyone else. I've been walking regularly for the past two months and I can see a difference. It has quickly become my favorite way of exercising. I walk at a good pace around 3.1-3.3 for 3 miles.

Yes, you can lose weight by walking and eating healthy, drinking lots of water and getting enough sleep. So far I have lost over 15 pounds in two months from walking.
Plus side to walking: it is easy, free, and you can do it anywhere.

I think walking is the best! But Interval walking will make a bigger difference in cardio results and weight loss.

When I started my weight loss adventure two years ago all I felt comfortable enough to do was to walk 2.5 miles a day six days a week when it was darker out so no one could see me. Between walking and watching my portion sizes I managed to drop 15 pounds in three months which might not be a lot to some people, but at the time it made me feel like a million dollars!!! When I first started it took me almost an hour to walk those miles, but now I can have them done in 28-30 minutes!!

LISALOOPNER,

There are members who will tell you how they lost 100+ pounds just by walking and watching what they ate. Do you know member INDYGIRL ? She started her journey at 460+ pounds and she had mobility issues. Some days, she wasn't able to walk, so she did upper body exercises. In two years, she's lost half that weight.

Walking is wonderful cardiovascular exercise. If you want a healthy heart, walk as often as possible. If you want to lose weight, you have to eat right and watch your portions.

Walking is great exercise! (assuming that you are walking quickly and not just strolling). Here is a SP article about it.

Can you really lose weight just walking? I know you have to eat right as well but is walking really enough?
