I really struggle with water weight-and sodium is a huge part of that. When I realized that even though I was doing well with calories (haven't gone over in over a month!) my sodium was totally out of wack I had SP start tracking it for me. I still go over on a regular basis-it's so hard. A lot of the time stuff that is marketed as "healthy" is loaded with sodium to make it taste so yummy. Also a lot of stuff that is preserved is full of sodium. I consider today to be a personal victory because I was only at 2700 my (my goal is 2300 mg, but usually i go well into the 3-4000 range). Sometimes stuff has sodium in it that I would never expect.
Anyway the point of the matter is that sodium makes us retain water-especially around menstruation. Try to pay attention to it and you should see some results. Not to mention that it's just plain bad for us! Too much sodium can increase our blood pressure and have other bad effects on our cardiovascular system. Just keep plugging at it and watch the salt and you'll do great.
Hi MonkeyJen! I know how you feel. I've been back on track for about 7 weeks now, and the first 3 weeks I GAINED weight! It was SO FRUSTRATING! Then I lost a little, then again his week I GAINED! But, I know I'm making better choices, and I'm doing good things for my body. That's all we can do, right? Are you very susceptible to water-weight? I am, and if I even SEE a tortilla chip, my body starts holding on to water. I can go up or down 3-5 pounds in one day. I'm trying to focus more on how I feel, and less on the number between my toes. I noticed you mentioned wine - for me, wine has also been a challenge. This week I've been working on reigning in the wine calories too, and I'm really hoping it makes a difference on the scale. I know it makes a difference in my resolve. :) Good luck to you~

Take a deep breathe. What you're experiencing is perfectly normal like Coach Nancy said. it's nothing more than a temporary water weight gain. Ever notice your weight goes up during TOM ? Most women tend to gain weight during their menstrual cycle. Is that a fat gain ? Nope, it's nothing more than a temporary water weight gain that passes in a few days.
I can easily "gain" 3-4 pounds in a day ! Is that a fat gain ? Nope, that too is nothing more than a temporary water weight gain that passes in a few days.
You're going to see many ups and downs as you lose. So, don't assume something must be wrong if the scale goes up. It's normal. This is not the Biggest Loser. You will not see a dramatic change in the scale in so short a time. Weight loss is a slow steady process that takes time.
In short, you're normal.

Don't panic. You are doing just fine...TRUST ME!!!
Our weight is not a static number, but more like a vital sign. Just like your blood pressure, heart rate and body temp will vary throughout the day, same is true with your weight. Because our bodies are largely made up of water (the fitter we are the more water we retain), any deviation in our diet, hydration, workouts, even hormones can lead to a shift on the scale.
It isn't uncommon to see a slight upward shift in weight when we start exercising, or add a new training regimen and eating better. For one the muscles are making more mitochondria which allow for extra glycogen-stored glucose in the cells- therefore, your body hangs on to more water to help with the cooling off process for exercise and for helping process energy. Your muscles will also have an increase in blood volume in order to have better availability to oxygen and removing waste, especially lactic acid. These things coupled with eating higher fiber foods, such as fruits and veggies can show a gain, when in all reality it is just a shift in fluids.
TRUST THE PROCESS that you are making changes, just don't let the scale be your determining factor.

I've been so good all week tracking what I ate and staying within my recommended totals. I even exercised two days and laid off the wine except for one day (I used to have around two glasses a night). How in the world have I put on weight instead of losing!!!??? Maybe my body is adjusting to appropriate nutrition? ARG!
