Water is better. Tea contains other things and your body (liver, kidneys etc.) is put to work to remove / process these things. Your body needs all its power and energy to deal with the weight loss. Don't tire your organs needlessly. Black tea would be terrible because of the cafeine in it. Sweeteners too would not be good at all and hinder the body and it's weight loss. Herbal tea is a possibility but I'd still make sure that half of what you drink is water.

Oh my gosh! You all just made my day! I rarely make my water consumption, but I haven't ever counted unsweetened iced tea (though I always thought it should count). I've only ever counted actual water. Ya'll just MADE MY DAY !!!!

When I drink my unsweetened tea I count it towards my water intake. I usually drink water, but when I start getting bored with it I will switch to the tea.

A liquid is a liquid but the caffeine would be too much for me. I would go with the water!
Nothing beats a cup of iced water in hot weather, but I also love chinese teas and green teas!

The liquids you drink count as water, no matter what else is in the drink. If it has caffeine, you need a bit more water for it to have the same benefit but the idea that drinks with caffeine in them don't count as any water are false.
I don't care for unsweetened tea and would likely rather have water. But if you put splenda in it, that is different story. I really like my diet soda, crystal light, and coffee.

I like my water, but yes I guess it could count as water since it has no sugar, or cream. I count my decaff tea at night as water.
I'd say it does... you're supposed to drink around 8 cups of any liquid. Water is better because it has no sugar and no calories... but unsweetened tea doesn't have cals or sugar either so I guess it's just as good....
