Hi! I quit smoking almost 27 days ago (26 days 20 hours 56 minutes, to be precise... :)
I know because I've been using QuitIt, a free iPhone app. You input how much you used to smoke and how much a pack costs near you. I love it because it tells you how long you've been smoke-free, how much $ you've saved, how many cigarettes you would've smoked, relevant recent health benefits etc. It's really motivational for me to see that data - I've saved over $250 already!!! Every time I think about smoking I open it up and remind myself why I quit.

Quitting smoking is a good choice. Give up a bad habit, take up a good habit and don't look back. If I had known what to expect when I quit it may have been a little easier. I picked a day. Friday was my last day of smoking. Saturday i kept busy, drank lots of water, chewed sugarless gum. The nicotine cravings were like large waves. The more I ignored it the smaller the waves got. The restless feelings were the nicotine demons that were trying to leave my body and I helped them along. This was way back in 1994

I quit 3+ years ago with the help of Chantix and several sites like whyquit.com... like many others, I was an off again / on again smoker... Always quitting, but always starting again. However, this last quit was different. I was absolutely disgusted with the habit and determined to become an ex-smoker. Chantix took the edge off and the websites provided support, but at that point - I think any smoking aid would have helped. I was just *that* ready.
I quit smoking last June (2012). I went from 30 a day to zero overnight. I used the nicotine patches and found they worked very well to take the edge off. To this day I haven't had a cigarette and I can tell you it's the single best decision I have ever made in my life. I did gain weight, but seriously, it's a small price to pay and I am losing the weight again now. I found a smart phone app called "Get rich or die smoking" which tallies up how long you've been without a cigarette, how many cigarettes you haven't smoked, how much money you have saved, how many mg of nicotine and tar you haven't inhaled and all the improvements in your body. I am in the UK so that exact app might not be available to you if you are based elsewhere but there are so many similar apps I would be surprised if you couldn't get a similar one.

I used quitnet, but also (and more helpful)-- there is a program run by the Lung Association called Quit4Life, they hold classes at the local hospital once a week. It's free, you don't have to quit before you start going (it's almost more helpful if you haven't quit first), and you don't get kicked out or anything if you slip up and smoke. You just can't sit there and smoke during a meeting. They give you a workbook and lots of stuff to do to help you come up with plans to handle stress etc. It's lead by volunteers who've been successful quitting smoking. Great support group. I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere so I reckon there's something like this available just about anywhere.
Free support offered in almost every state. Primarily coaching sessions (1 time per week) and some states will offer assistance with nicotine replacement.

There is a quitting smoking group on sparkpeople, too.
I quit 5 years ago. I used chantix and it helped, but like so many other things, it is a tool. I had to decided that I was done with smoking and decided not to pick up a cigarette every time I wanted one. I haven't had a cig since then, but I do still have urges to smoke. So I just remember... One puff away from a pack a day.
I quit on 3 separate occasions before it "stuck" - first twice were flat out cold turkey (BRUTAL). Third time round i just couldn't face another cold-turkey episode, so i used nicotine patches. They did help make the quitting process less uncomfortable, by allowing me to break the "ritualistic" habits (the sitting down with coffee - and a cig. the having-something-in-my-hand. the taking a deep drag for "relaxation") separately from the physical addiction to nicotine.
Good luck! It's a big challenge but your body will be so grateful to you for it!
