It was counter-intuitive to me at first too. But just focus on doing the correct breathing pattern (in on the easy part, out on the hard part) and it will become second nature in no time.

You're certainly not alone. I've found that sometimes, too.... I have a tendency to hold my breath! It can seem like a lot to do, all at one time-- do the exercise, and watch your form, and breathe at the right time. It's one of those things that gets easier with time and practice. I still sometimes have to remind myself to exhale during the hard part. Which can be easier said than done, when it can ALL feel like the "hard part"!

I completely agree with you! I also find it to be very counter-intuitive. Something I need to keep working on. But you're not alone. Breathing that way feels really unnatural to me. Hopefully as I get more accustomed to exercize it will eventually start to feel "right".

After a while, for me, it became second nature to exhale on the hard part of the movement, as mentioned by Coach Jen.

It was almost as if my body was saying "Phew! That's the hard part done!", and then I would take a lovely large breath in, getting ready to repeat the movement.

I think of the exhale as helping me during the hard part of the movement, so I push the air out as I push the weight up. Just another way to think about it :)

Thanks very much for your answer - I appreciate it.

I have been doing it wrong, just as I suspected. It's counter-intuitive for me, as I always feel I should exhale on the "release" part of the movement, not on the hardest part. It seems backwards to me for some reason.

I'll try to remember what you've said and keep working at it.

You exhale during the hard part of the movement. So for example if you're doing a pushup, you exhale as you're pushing up. If you're squatting, exhale as you stand up.

Does anyone else have trouble with inhaling at the correct time and exhaling at the correct time when exercising? All throughout my life, whenever I've been in fitness classes (years ago) or when I do an exercise video now, I can never breathe at the times when the instructor says to. It's like they're always doing it the opposite of what my body wants to do. It's not intuitive (at least for me) at all.

I get frustrated because the instructors tend to repeat the movements, when what I really need them to repeat is "inhale, now exhale," over and over again until I get it. I can see the movements they're doing because I'm looking at them, but I can't see the breathing and I always forget on which movement I'm supposed to inhale and which movement I'm supposed to exhale.

I feel really stupid about this and it stresses me out when trying to exercise - I want to do it correctly, but I always struggle with this. I've never heard anyone else say they have this problem.
