My son transitioned into his toddler bed around 16 months as he was starting to climb out of his crib. When he would wake up during the night he would just stand up in his bed and yell for me, he never got out. He transitioned very easily and was super excited to not have to sleep in a baby crib anymore.

Another thought is you could put those safety bed rails on the bed... might be a visual boundary for him.

I think my DD was about 18 months... She's tall and could actually put her whole leg on the top rail. I was also concerned that she would wake up and wonder around the house. Whenever she would wake up she would just cry for me - she would not get up. It was like there was some invisible boundary or something. It wasn't until she was about 2.5 that she would get out of her bed on very rare occasions and come into our room. We never co-slept with her so the habit of sleeping with us wasn't established. She never wondered around the house, she always came straight to our room. She'll be 3 in a month and almost never wakes up until morning. I say go for it.

My oldest went to a toddler bed at 2 years old, and each of my two younger ones went in at 20 months. The transition was much easier at 20 months than 2. I should say that independent sleeping is very important in our family, and so we never co-slept with our children. They slept in our room as infants, but never in our bed. Consequently, we never have our children try to crawl into our bed at night, they much prefer their own beds. I mention this because if your child really likes to sleep in your bed, you may have a frequent visitor once he can be more mobile.

We left our son in his crib for as long as we could. He's never been the best sleeper so I liked having him unable to move around on his own. Once we switched him over to his toddler bed we had weeks of battling with him to get him to stay in it. Eventually is stuck (for the most part). We finally just started giving him books to "read" until he fell asleep. Oh, and at 4 years old he will still get up in the middle of the night and crawl into bed with us. Of course your child may adjust better than mine did. Does he sleep well when you put him in the crib? If not, it may be to early still

Good luck!

My son just turned 15 months and we are considering transitioning him to a toddler bed. From what I've read online, this might be a little early for him developmentally wise. He is a crawler and a climber though. Before I put his crib on the last notch, he fell/climbed out of his crib twice which prompted us to purchase the toddler bed in the first place. The problem we're facing other than the fact that it might be too early for him is that he is still waking a few times a night and we're concerned he'll leave his bed waking him up further. Any suggestions? Advice? Tips? Do's and Don'ts?
