I ate at home, went on a nice hike in the redwoods, returned home to cook and eat dinner, and went to a summer market with my husband. We made it through the entire day spending time together and not eating out.
I agree that many times happiness is a choice - but also agree with KJ that we want the real thing, not some fake happiness. And happiness involves being a blessing to others - not smiling while we cause unhappiness to someone else. There are some 'external' things that make me happy: being outside on a lovely day being by the sea walking in the countryside knowing that I've achieved something I needed to do being with good friends or family finding just the right gift for someone receiving just the right gift from someone.
The one single thing that gives me consistent happiness is my relationship with God through Jesus. The thing that is most likely to wreck my happiness is if I hold on to a grudge instead of immediately forgiving somebody.

Having fun with my family- especially my siblings and their kids, my cat, "me time," relaxing, taking a walk in nice cool weather without it being all muggy/really humid, as well as other things of course.
I believe happiness is a choice. I also believe that it's not always easy to choose that. For me happiness is riding the motorcycle with Dennis.....hanging out with Jesus......my weight lifting class.....and my dog Shelby.
I do have a list of things that make me happy but to address a point not yet discussed, I totally hate FALSE happiness. Ya know, that Amway smile where everything is just so awesome or that one church lady who you can't ever seem to get her to break character because she just fake smiles all the time while plotting your demise.
I agree that we ourselves get to decide to be happy or not, for me, it's not always my choice, sometimes angst just feels better.

My cat, family, friends.
The fact that I can get up and move and do for myself makes me happy. I'm sure there are other things that make me happy, but these are at the top of my list.
I know this sounds weird, but I am mostly a happy person. It takes a lot to pull me out of happiness.
I find it's not things that make me happy, what i am grateful for makes me happy:
friends, family, solitude, books, music, food, travel, new experiences, making other people happy, volunteering, exercise, shopping, driving with the windows open and smelling ocean, desert, mountains. Watching live performances - theater, music, sports. Creating art.

I read an article recently titled "Choose Happiness". It's premise is that we can choose to be happy even in rough times. It also pointed out the many ways that being happy is very good for our health. I've listed a few of the things that make me happy. What's on your list? Be happy!
Hugs-giving and getting Smiles Time with family Finding the perfect gift for someone Walking on the beach Finding a rare seashell on the beach Flower gardens Puppies Fresh picked tomatoes Chocolate
