Born & raised in northern IN, but now live in southern IN. You'd think they were two entirely different hemispheres. After tasting life south of the Mason-Dixon line, I'd never go back to the north. You never heard terms like 'State's rights' in the north. You were taught that the Stars & Bars was an evil flag. 'Hillbilly' was a term of denigration in the north, whereas here it's practically a badge of honor. I don't view it as a negative at all, but instead consider those who use it in the north negatively as largely uninformed, small minded and ignorant. As for the term 'War of Northern Aggression' it was not spoken in northern IN. Only heard the reference on The Beverly Hillbillies. Even tho IN was considered a northern State, there are deep southern sympathies in southern IN, folks who would gladly whistle 'Dixie'. After all of these years I finally get it. The Civil War was a very complex & multi-fascited tragedy. No amount of diplomacy would avoid it. The more I study the subject, the more I understand why so many in the south will never forget. What a surprise when I discovered that my very roots trace back to a small County in TN and there are more than a few Confederate skeletons in the closet. Until just a few years ago I thought I was a northerner thru and thru. Life's discoveries are always amazing!
Now I have heard Bless your heart. And bless your little angel heart.
Still I have family that is born, raised and will die, in the South. Just my entire family on my mother and fathers side. Some have already passed. I would think that qualifies as Dyed in the wool, southern.

I also have heard that and called it that. If you look at the real facts of what started it, it is 100% accurate.

I'm a little nervous when I travel thru the south.... years ago a colleague of mine went to buy some snacks at a small deli. The clerk kept serving everyone but my friend.... he was wearing a YANKEEs baseball cap. My friend finally asked him why...and the clerk admitted what my friend suspected. nuff said
