Those definitions don't take your exercise into account- it's everything else you're doing throughout the day. Sedentary doesn't mean you're not exercising much, it just means that most of your day (working in an office) isn't spent on your feet, etc.

I know that Sparkpeople works out calories for you, but I'm curious about how to decide your definition of lightly active,moderately active, sedentary and so on.

I work a desk job all day and aside from getting up to drink water, taking a brief walk at lunch time, and my public transport commute (walking from one platform to another, up the stairs at the station and so on), I don't move! This would class me as sedentary.

BUT, at the weekends and in the evenings, I exercise like a crazy person. I take professional level hip hop dance classes six hours a week, sometimes two hours in a day, and on the days I don't, I'm running or lifting weights.

With this in mind, I know I'm not sedentary, but the definitions of lightly and moderately active give me the impression I need to be moving all day long to be classed as one of those. I've posted them below.

(just to be clear, I'm not interested in the Spark method of working these out - I'm thinking outside the Spark box :) )

Sedentary = Little or no exercise, desk job
Lightly Active = Light exercise or sports 1-2 days/week
A Little More Active = Exercise or sports 2-4 days/week
Moderately Active = Moderate exercise or sports 4-5 days/week
Very Active = Hard exercise or sports 6-7 days/week
Extra Active = Very hard daily exercise or sports AND physical job or 2X day training
