I saw someone mention doing Pilates, and there are so many ways you can work on your upper body and core using Pilates without using your wrists, however I would definitely learn how to do the movements with the aid of an instructor at first, even if you don't stick with them. There are also ways to use your arms without yours wrists (I know sounds counter intuitive, but at one point in my life I could use my left wrist for about 18 months before surgery to fix a torn cartilage catching like a hangnail on a bone), for example some Pilates equipment uses pulleys with straps on the ends, instead of holding on with your hands use your forearms as much as possible. That will strengthen your upper body as well. I hope that you're able to get use of your hands and wrists back. I couldn't use my arm for 18 months before surgery and 6 months after surgery, but that was only one, I can't imagine both. I would have such a hard time. Good luck!

Thanks so much for all of your insights and suggestions! Yes, I wear a brace when the pain is particularly bad. Although, since modifying my daily activities, I find that I need to wear it less and less. I usually just put it on now when I nurse my daughter.
I will definitely try doing the movements without the weights...derp! Why didn't I think of that?! :)

If you're doctor doesn't want you to use your wrists, that will make any strength training types of exercises difficult. I too would suggest asking for physical therapy for your wrists. Not being able to use them really will limit your activities.
However, I do have one idea, PENDING doctor approval. You might be able to do some, but not all, pilates exercises. There are several pilates poses like the hundred that do not involve placing weight on the wrists.
If you've never done pilates, you really should work with a knowledgeable instructor. Don't try to do this on your own or you do risk hurting yourself. Because of your wrist issue, you have to proceeed with a lot of caution.
In fact, if your doctor wants you to lay off upper body exercise until your wrists heal, you may want to do that. Instead of working on your upper body, work your lower body instead. Take a daily walk or use the elliptical. You'd still be active even though you might not have the core strength you want.
I understand that you want to be fit, but any upper body exercise you do really does increase your risk for further injury.
You can ask your doctor if it's okay to do pilates. If they say no, you're going to have to sit tight. As long as you are eating right and watching your portions, you will not gain weight because you can't exercises as vigorously as you'd like. When it comes to gaining or losing weight, what matters most is what we eat. Good nutrition is what takes the weight off and keeps it off. Exercise is what keeps our bodies fit.
In short, you can't outrun a bad diet with exercise. I can assure you that if you eat right and watch your portions, you can still lose weight. It might be slow, but slow and easy really does win this race.

Did they offer any kind of brace for your wrists? You can still do toning exercises without weights - try one of the videos and work through the routine without any weights.

Thanks for the suggestion but I went to a physical therapist. I was told the same. I am to use moist heat for pain, stretch a few times daily, and avoid using my hands as much as possible.

I'd ask your doctor for a referral to a physical therapist who could a) help you rehab your wrists and b) give you exercises that wouldn't aggravate your wrists.

Hello everyone!! I hope you are all well and happy today!
I was recently advised by my doctor to avoid using my wrists for at least the next few months due to some serious pain I am having. Overuse makes it MUCH worse and I have to be very careful with lifting most anything (kind of difficult with my 17lb baby girl!). This is such a bummer since I reeeeaally want to start my get fit post baby journey!
Will anyone suggest some exercises I can do to strengthen and tone my upper body and core. Remember, anything involving weight bearing is completely off limits, including even holding weights.
