Prayers for your mother. I want you to focus on taking care of you. Walking for an hour outside, at the gym, or even around the hospital will clear your head and make you more effective for your mother. Stairs are also great. I would start with 2 flights (since you said that is where you feel comfortable) and add a flight every couple of days. I believe in you; I know you can do it. I also encourage you to spend AT LEAST 8 hours away from the facility and to have faith that the doctors and nurses are trained to provide the care she needs at this time.
So sorry to hear about your mother. Have you looked around the fitness articles section at all? there are several things geared toward desk workouts that you should be able to do. if you search desk workouts the video will show up as well as a few other articles.
Bless you and I hope your mother can recover soon. These can be very difficult times. I recently spent a week away from home for a family funeral. No time for exercise except for a walk one day. And food was everywhere. I did gain 1.5 lbs and will work to get that off now.
I would suggest walking but you realized that. Be sure to hydrate, hospitals are notoriously dry. Take care.
Just had an after thought. Does the hospital have an exercise room you could use? As long as you let the nurses station know where you are, it should be OK.

I have spent the last 4 days in ICU with mom. Eating right hasn't been too hard but being unable to get to the gym is going to slow me down. I have no idea how much longer we will be here as each day in a roller coaster. I am walking a lot and tried the stairs but I thought they were going to have to give me oxygen. She is on the 5 th floor so that probably wasn't too smart. Need to try 1-2 flights at a time. I can't leave or go too far cause her condition is very critical still.
