5x5 lifting programs have been around for at least 30 years but you are correct, they are indeed awesome. Particularly if you have never really lifted much before.

Hate to sound like a hipster on this one, but the app is just a snazzy way of doing a classical strength training regime that's been around for years. The lifting program is pretty awesome though.

I've been doing it a few weeks now and I LOVE it. I'm getting stronger, but little by little. It's not that hard, even though i'm lifting Olympic barbells, lol. Anybody else here tried it?
