Ten years ago I was a "gym rat" and always took the step classes. We looked like a fine tuned dance team and I know it was hard for anyone joining the class - at first. A word to the wise - step has disappeared for a reason. It blew out too many knees. The constant pressure led to many injuries over the course of time.

Step aerobics is REALLY easy to modify. I used to take a class where the teacher did some nutsy stuff, and honestly, I did what I could, and still got a great workout. Sometimes I had to modify moves for my ankle. You also learn as you go; the first time, you'll flail and miss your marks a lot, but after a month, you'll have it down pat. :)

Another option would be to do the step aerobics videos you found, but modify the moves. This is something people do even in step aerobics classes. If a move is complicated or difficult for someone, they will usually just do the simple step up and down, or maybe do part of the move and return to the step up and down. This might be a good idea, and over time you can work up to doing the more complicated moves in the video.

The amount of calories burned depends on how hard you are working, but it generally burns between 400-700 calories/hour. I found those numbers using this site: http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc

For a more accurate reading, I would suggest a heart rate monitor that can give you your calories burned based on your statistics. I like the ones made by Polar.

love my old workout DVDs from The Firm. You can still find used copies (try Second Spin's site)

Look for the retro videos from the early 90's, before people starting going insane with choreography. Gin Miller might be good. I haven't done step in years, but the majority of people would use the step + 1 risor.

I'm interested in step aerobics, but every video I have checked out on Collage Video looks difficult and not like something I could keep up with. Anyone know of any *simple* step workout videos? And should I be looking for a step with a particular rise?

Also - approximately how many calories can you burn doing step aerobics?
