I like the gym in the winter months and outdoors in the summer months. I like to change my workouts so I don't think I would want to work out 12 months a year in the same place.

i would go with whatever you are most comfortable with and most likely to stick with.
or you can always do a combo of the 2.....lol

the thing is to just get moving and stay moving

I do both, but I no longer attend a traditional gym. I have been indoor rock climbing for four months now, so my gym budget goes to the climbing gym, and I try to get there at least once or twice a week. The rest of the time I work out at home. I do have an elliptical machine, but I also do workout dvds, and when the weather is decent, I run outside. I highly recommend looking into a running program - I never thought I could be a runner, but I followed the rookie running program here on spark and it was amazing for me, and it's actually something I am finding myself enjoying and actually wanting to go out and do.

Thanks everyone for all of your opinions. I think I will probably end up doing both when it is all said and done with. I dont have a treadmill or anything like that at home, just some hand weights and one of those pilates balls and a ton of dvds lol! emoticon

it's all about what works best for you. I have a treadmill a weight bench weights and stretch bands. I love my workouts at home. I can do it when I want too. I don't have to wait my turn to use a machine at the gym. So with that being said I am off to go lift weights. Remember it's a life style change and not a quick fix. Be sure and find a workout u like so u will keep doing it.

If you can afford it, I agree that a gym is probably best... BUT I can't afford to join a gym, so I use a community swimming pool for aquafit and lengths, use my treadmill, free weights and resistance bands, and go for walks... all free since I've had the equipment for some years.

Both work, but only if you work hard at it.

If you can afford it I think the gym is best- one that offers lots of classes and personal training. Nothing beats a workout with a personal trainer who knows your needs. Not to say that home workouts can't be effective- they can if you are disciplined.

Both. Wherever it's most likely to happen. I use a fitness center 3 times a week, but that's less convenient so other days I do something like walk at home-outside if weather cooperates, otherwise treadmill.

Thanks guys!! Yea I enjoy doing at home so I dont look like a moron infront of people trying to do aerobics! LOL But at the same time I like going to the gym because i more likely to go and actually work out since I am paying for it monthly!!! :) Plus there are more machines and equipment. For now, I will work out at home and over the next few weeks I will probably join a gym, especially since there is one right by my house! YAY

I have always said that home is better because "I can workout anytime"......Which rarely happened. I just joined a gym last week and I have been doing well with going. I am hoping it will stick, I know a lot of us are all gun-ho at first with our goals and then sometimes we fizzle out. So far I really think the gym is helping me more. I tend to work out a little longer and harder there since I am with so many other people who are doing the same thing. Good Luck in whatever you choose. Just remember the most important thing is to work out and move a little each day no matter where you are.

I think it ultimately comes down to where you are most apt to workout the most. If you are more comfortable at home or its easier to fit it in, then workout at home! Theres no wrong or right way to do this. For me personally, I like going to the gym because I think its more motivating to be around others who are also working out. Maybe give both options a shot and see which one you like better. Alot of gyms will give free trial passes to newbees for a week or so. Good luck!!!!

Well unfortunately I strayed away during the holidays like I knew I would. So now with 2012 here and no more excuses its time to get back on track! Every year we go to Lake Kissimee in May and I want to have a decent bathing suit body this year lol! So its time to buckle down and make things really happen this time. I even went out and bought some work out equipment today. Which does bring me to a question for anyone who is reading this.....is it better to join a gym or just work out at home with dvds???? Any input is greatly appreciated! And Happy New Year to all! Lets make it the best one yet!
