I would stick with it. When I was jogging 20-25 miles/week I could basically eat anything. I think your body just needs to get into it, you know? If you are that close to your goal weight it must be frustrating at something you see as a setback, but if you love jogging and keep it up, you will be able to maintain your healthy lifestyle much more easily in the long run. Plus, its a great way to clear your head - mentally it is divine.

I am very jealous of you CA people - running in the Northeast in the winter is difficult, unless you like tiptoeing through ice patches (which is good for agility, I suppose). I'll be on the treadmill mostly till March-April LOL

I live in California. It's been perfect weather for jogging, which I've been doing every day. I'm up another 1.6 pounds, ugh! This sucks! I had a bitter greens and feta salad for lunch today. I'm making myself a black bean taco salad for dinner tonight. (Everyone else is having pasta and bread.) I'm just going to keep my calories low and keep running. I love it so much!!! I added my regular routine of weight training back in also. I'm really hoping I can get this weight gain figured out and under control soon!!!!

On the subject of beginning jogging:
I'm sure everyone's body works differently, but when I tried to run at a heavier weight (185) I was not ready for it. I ended up with stress fractures in my legs after one day of walk/jog intervals. Anyone beginning to jog really needs to listen to cues from their body and be careful. You can really hurt yourself. I did, and it was very painful!!! It also set me back mentally and physically, making my weight loss journey even harder for me. Please be careful!

I didn't get much running or exercise in this weekend. It was minus 8 degrees and the wind was blowing. I did go and walk some.. emoticon

Nope, it doesn't work for anyone. It's a complete myth that doing it that way builds anything but the ability to keep doing it that way. If muscular endurance is an aim that's great, but usually people want to either lose fat or gain strength (or both), and lifting heavy for low reps is the key to both of those.

I love running and honestly, if running meant bigger pants, I'd buy bigger pants.

But, of course, first I'd try everything I could think of to have skinny legs AND run. :)

In the past, I've been able to run half marathons and still drop sizes by making sure that I also do heavy lifting. None of this low weight-high reps stuff for me (I know, it works for others, not me though). I do big ol' body builder compound lifts: bench press, squats, overhead press, deadlifts. By building up that muscle while also running, I was able to drop from size 6 to size 2 without losing any weight.

And, yes, your body can hold on to lots of water. LOTS. It's insane really. And yes, a new exercise regimen can do that. I'd give it some more time before I gave up on running if I were you.

You don't need to drop excess lbs before you start running. Just start! I lost 70 lbs from February of last year till December of last year. It was all through running and watching what I eat.

I would like to learn how to run, but I too am a walker, never really been a runner, But in order for me to lose weight, I think I need to get the energy to run.. So after reading your post, it has inspired me to get moving faster and give jogging a try, once I get rid of the excess weight.

My experience:
I gave up jogging so I could lose my jogging weight. (about 15 lbs)
I love it so much and miss it, so I still go out once in a while. It's my decompression exercise - sometimes I have to run, or I will explode.
It gives me such a big, uncontrollable appetite that I don't eat properly. But darn, does it feel good to run!
Nowadays, you'll find me on a bike. Good exercise, no overgrown appetite. So far, I've lost 9 of those 15 lbs in the last 4 months. :) But I still like to get out there and run - it's my indulgence.

I can understand your thighs and calves become more muscular from running. It is a very dynamic sport. If you love to run, but don't want the muscle, how about intervals? That will kick up the calorie burn as well. Did you happen to take any measurements before your weight gain-just to see the real difference? It could be your genetics with the running. Some runners are very lean, others develop the "bulky" muscles. Also, I'm not being accusatory or judgemental here, but are you eating the same number of calories as you were when you were walking? I know I've made the mistake of eating more just because I worked out a little harder on certain days. Or, perhaps, the opposite, you NEED to eat more! Have you updated your calories to reflect your running? Just some thoughts to explore! emoticon

Why do you think water weight wouldn't cause a visible difference? Where did you think you would be storing that water? :)

How long has it been? It's totally normal to gain when starting a new exercise plan. Although 10lbs is a little on the high side.

How did you adjust your eating when you took up running?

For starters, I *guarantee* you your calves don't look nearly as "huge" as you think they do. We are always our own worst critics! ;) How long ago did you start running?

Weight gain of this nature is totally normal when you intensify your program, and yes, it can affect the size of your muscles. Your muscles basically act like sponges, and soak up water to cope with the new levels of exercise.

I spent 14 months literally walking off my excess weight. I walked hours every day. I used a TotalGym a few times a week for toning and that is it. I was only 3 pounds from my goal weight--FINALLY--and decided to kick it up and jog a couple miles instead of walking. I discovered, quickly, that I love it! Even more than walking!!! BUT...I've gained 10 pounds!!! And I can't get my skinny jeans on anymore because my calves are too big! I'm really confused because I thought jogging would help me slim down, not bulk up. I do NOT have ANY desire to get bigger, because muscle or fat! My goal is to slim down, not get bulky. I don't know what to do!!! Do I give up something I love to stick with my goals or buy bigger pants (that thought just kills me) and keep at. Is this a temporary thing??? Anyone else have this issue? At one point, I thought maybe it was because I'm walking so much less and I should add in another hour of walking, but it seems like major over-kill to me. Anyway, I woke up this morning and undressed to hop on the scale and was shocked to see my thighs are bigger now too. This is my worst nightmare! And even as I'm looking at them in horror, I have the urge to go for a jog. Ha ha

Any insight would be welcomed with open arms!!! I am clueless. I thought it was water weight, but that wouldn't cause visible differences, right? And it's not going away. Help!
