I have noticed this too. It seems like my squishy-ness goes away pretty quickly during the night when I get a good amount of sleep (10 or more hours, which is high for an adult but that my body will naturally sleep for 11 hours if I let myself wake up whenever). I always drink around 100 oz of water a day (becuse that is what Im thirsty for, not because I'm trying to meet a certain requirement). I will naturally drink more when I have higher sodium days.
Talking of odd places to lose fat, I realized this morning that I have lost fat in my toes, which weren't fat to begin with, They now look gross and bony. :-)

This is an intriguing thread to read. I was just noticing a few weeks ago that my hips aren't smooth and round anymore, but it looks like i have two volleyballs for hips that just sticks out now, what is that all about??? (no need to answer, it is just my least favorite part of my body) I know it all boils down to where my body is choosing to use fat for fuel. And it just so happens to be that my ankles have lost more inches than my hips. Strange, but I love my ankles now!

I was certainly not saying that I was suddenly fatless! But the weird, squishy, wibbly stuff seemed to diminish over the course of the week. I had put it down to lots of walking and running, but was also aware of the fact that I had drunk a huge amount if water. Fact is, it both feels and looks better!
I have been told that saunas are helpful with the fluid-y issue, and good for helping the loose skin tighten... Trying that next week!
DRAGONCHILDE - that's what squishy fat is, at least in terms of this thread. The idea is that you burn off the fat, and then water enters the damaged fat cell and sits there, until it leaves (and it can leave suddenly and in large amounts). This watery fat stuff has a weird lumpy appearance. Because I have this happen to me, I carb up sometimes and that pulls out the water, and I usually lose a few pounds suddenly - and yes, it's water retention, but the point is it does actually have a pretty big impact on how one looks, from one day to the next. It's not -- to my knowledge -- a scientifically proven concept, but it seems to work in my case!

I have just lost a bunch of this 'squishy fat', over the course of about a week. This time last week I was fretting over the loose, wobbly bits and this morning it looks like someone photoshopped them out!
Of course, the decline of one thing I hate has merely highlighted something I was previously unaware of, but it's all moving in the right direction!

Oh, I really hope that my squishy fat will be gone soon! I have lost 40 lbs overall, and now I have noticed something I didn't have before: cellulite. My overlayer of fat is gone and now I can feel the bumps beneath.

i agree that i find the fat gets squishier before it goes away- for me it also gets lumpier looking unfortunately as it leaves at different paces! strength training def helps, but i have a long way to go until everything is smooth and as it should be!
I've not only heard of it, I've incorporated elements into my plan. I do a big carb refeed 1-2 times/month to pull that water out. It does happen to me, and the carbing does work for me, BUT I just want to be clear that I'm only talking about ME and I'm sure for others it can be very different. I do very intense strength training every day combined with a hypocaloric diet.

Are you strength training?
If you are not strength training, and doing cardio only, as much as 25% of your weight loss can come from lean muscle tissue. This can result in something unfondly known as "skinny fat" where you weigh little, but have a high body fat percentage.
I've never heard of this water/fat thing, but water retention is common, especially when you start exercising to lose weight or increase the intensity of your program. What happens is not that fat cells are filled with water, but your muscles retain water to deal with the new demands placed on it. This is one reason it can take 6-8 weeks for healthy lifestyle changes to show up on the scale.

i haven't heard of the water-replacing-fat phenomenon, but i have heard that fat becomes looser and softer right before you lose it, because more blood begins to circulate through it and such. imagine a block of ice melting--it gets softer and squishier right before it goes away. so what you're going through is very common, and it probably means that you are about to lose whatever areas are feeling particularly squishy :)

but I know that strength training is excellent for firming up your body during and after significant weight loss.
If you aren't already doing some strength exercises, consider adding them to your routine!

Last night as I was admiring my 12 lb weight loss in the mirror, I noticed that my love handles, lower back, and butt had very squishy fat... that only 5 weeks ago was firm and tight (and full of fat). I googled and found Lyle MacDonald's article about "swooshes and whooshes" and it all makes sense that the fat left the cell and now water occupies it...
Anyway, Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon?
How quickly did the squishy fat melt off after you noticed it?
