This is what my Mother would call Sunday Gravy because she would cook it on Sunday morning and we would enjoy it for dinner !!
GRANDMA'S PASTA SAUCE
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, chopped
1 tablespoon basil
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes ( kitchen ready )
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
2 cups water
Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-low heat, and cook and stir the onion and garlic until cooked but not browned.
Pour in the crushed tomatoes and 2 cups of water and bring the mixture to a low boil, stirring frequently.
Add the tomato paste and keep mixing until all incorporated
Add the seasonings and mix well.
Lower heat and simmer all day long ( at least 5 hours ) stirring every 30 minutes or so.
Sauce will get nice and thick...yummmy
