I am also a "plan ahead-er". I try to figure out what I'm going to have for lunch and fix for dinner as I'm putting in my breakfast items. That makes me really think ahead so I'm not caught off-gaurd after work, wandering around my kitchen starving and just wanting to eat something fast. Even if I don't follow my plan, (kids want Jimmy John's, friend wants to bring over take-out), I still have a good idea of how many calories I can budget and make better choices.
Motivation isthe ahardest part of this journey - we just have to keep at it! Good luck!

This week I am trying to plan ahead. Last night, I fixed my lunch, planned my dinner, and took a mental inventory of what there was for breakfast. I put my lunch and dinner into my meal plan, so I already knew going into this morning what I had going today. So today, during the day, I didn't have to enter anything except breakfast and my snack.
So I am wondering if planning ahead, at least in a general sense, would help you feel more in control and you wouldn't have to work at tracking all day, just for a few minutes in the evenings.

Thank you all so much for the suggestions and encouragement. I don't have a smartphone, but I do have a phone that allows me to type in memos so that should help for on the go. I'm going to get out my food journal notebook and start that up again today too. I'm trying to make this a healthy lifestyle change, not a diet, but that doesn't mean it isn't still hard to keep at it. Thank you for reminding me to keep trying and not give up.

For me, in the past when I started yet another weight loss journey, it was all about losing weight. I wasn't focused on changing my ways...I was focused on my Monday morning weigh-ins...and good golly if I did not get the results I wanted or more importantly expected, I knew something was wrong...either medically or that I had permanently messed up my metabolism after 30 years of being on a perpetual roller coaster of diets (age 12-43).
Eight years ago (Feb 2005), I vowed this time was going to be different. I was going to make small, permanent changes so that I could finally let go of my dieting ways. It took me 3 1/2 years to lose 80 pounds (averaging only 4-6 ounces loss a week). When people hear that they tell me, oh my, I don't know if I could stick with it, that long.
My reaction...it must become your way of living. Letting go of the diet mentality is what FINALLY allowed me to not only lose the weight, but keep it off for longer than it did for me to lose it (4 1/2 years and counting).
This is why deprivation doesn't work. That doesn't mean I eat unhealthy foods daily, but I do not and have not deprived myself of the foods I enjoy. I just keep the portions in control and more importantly I track them, even if that means I go over may calories for the day. Knowing that I will be able to have cookies and candy throughout my healthy living journey allows me to enjoy a handful and not have the need to down the one-pound bag because tomorrow I am going to start my diet yet again.
Do not underestimate the power of small, permanent changes.
I know exactly what you mean, I find it much harder now, than when I joined in 2009. I started to think I could guess calories, and that was pretty good for maintaining, but I got stuck. Made a few false starts, where I tracked religiously for a day or two, then faltered. But now I know if I want to lose those last few pounds, I have to approach it as if I were a newbie. I'm telling myself
a) I know it works b) I won't do it for long (just till Christmas)
So once again I'm experiencing the satisfaction of a weekly weight loss, and am only 8lbs away from my goal weight. My smartphone has made a real difference, very easy to add foods on it. I'm also much more aware of the role of exercise than I was in 2009.

Get yourself a spiral notebook to use as a journal or if you have a phone or ipod make audio messages to yourself during the day.
I am a record after peson like you. A lot of people know what they are going to eat during the day and record before. You could try that and just update later for variances. By recording ahead you would be layign out a road map for what you can eat during the day.
If you have a smartphone, tracking can be a cinch. If not, try writing down everything you eat and taking it later. Just giving yourself daily"spark"time will help with you motivation. It always helps me get back in gear.

I'm not even sure what advice I'm looking for. I just need something to get me going again. I remember when I first joined Spark in January of 2008. I was new to the website so everything was new and interesting. I did everything back then. I tracked my food. I tracked my exercise. I set little goals and tracked them too. I engaged with the community A LOT more than I do now. Now, I feel like I don't have time for all that stuff. It no longer ranks high on my list of priorities, and I'm not sure how to get the motivation to put it back near the top. I've been trying to track my food more, but I haven't been doing well on that either. I've only tracked two full days this month. I resolved to track my food this morning, but it wasn't until I was done eating dinner that I realized I hadn't tracked anything since breakfast! I honestly forgot, and if I don't track throughout the day, I can't remember most of what I ate so I can't do it later. Any advice or encouragement will be greatly appreciated. I'm on my way to bed now, but I plan to check this first thing in the morning.
