It's been discussed here before; you can look up previous threads. The general conclusion is that it doesn't have much if any effect on weight or general health, and there are lots of healthier and MUCH more cost-effective ways to get fiber.
It's not hugely dangerous, but there have been a handful of cases of choking and of serious bowel obstruction from it. The biggest danger to most of us is to our pocketbooks; it is EXTREMELY overpriced for what it does.
