The human foot is designed to absorb the impact of walking and running, without the need for shoes.
Unfortunately, the modern trend to wearing shoes has lead to the atrophy of many of the small muscles in the foot that provide natural shock absorption. Many of the problems that people supposedly wear cushioning shoes to avoid, are actually caused by the wearing of shoes in the first place.
While there are many successful barefoot or minimalist runners and walkers, it is something you need to build up to over time, to allow those small muscles to get stronger. Going barefoot for moderate indoor exercise (which includes WATP videos) is actually a good way of rebuilding those muscles - just don't push too far too fast, and listen to what your body is telling you.

I have been doing Leslie Sansone's walking DVD's with bare feet for about 6 years. So far, no problems. (And I have been treated for plantar fasciitis twice before when I was younger.)
Wearing shoes just doesn't feel right for me in that situation.

I also have suffered with plantar fasciitis (not something you want to experience) and was told by my podiatrist to wear shoes from the time I get up until the time I go to bed. So I always wear my shoes during exercise, even when doing Leslie Sansone videos - better safe than sorry.
Positive thoughts lead to positive actions which yield positive results.
I wear good shoes whether walking/running indoors or out to prevent injury. I've had plantar fasciitis and want to avoid that pain at all costs!

My personal preference is to wear good running shoes while exercising. I like to put on my runners and workout clothes on first thing in the morning, it inspires me to stay active all day. I often work from home and I used to wear comfy cozy clothes, now I wear my runners and workout clothes and I notice I take more steps each day and do more exercise in general. I put on tunes while I cook or clean and get a bit of dancing in between chores etc. It is psychological for me, and I feel more fit and ready to go.

It's really about personal comfort, to me. Many people do full, outdoor runs barefoot! Not wearing shoes can build the muscles in your foot in different ways. Listen to your body... if you are experiencing pain in your arches, or elsewhere in your feet, you may need to take a trip to the doc to rule out medical issues, and may need supportive shoes to prevent injury, but if it's comfortable for you, go for it!

Heather Writer, mother, wife, and breadwinner. I love to run, but running doesn't love me, so I'm switching to my low-impact bike.
I just started doing Leslie Sansone walking videos in my basement (on carpet). I feel funny about wearing shoes so I have been doing it barefoot. Do you think that is a wise idea or is it better to get a pair of shoes? I have heard conflicting opinions.
