If I cough all night my husband does not let me workout....Usually if that happens the coughing at night leaves me to tired to workout.

As long as its only above the neck (headache, sinus congestion, etc), exercise is generally ok. If its in your throat or chest take a day or two off and focus on getting better.
You can work out safely so long as you have only a cold and your breathing is basically unchanged. Flu = no. Cold = sweat it out.
From my own life, I too have seen doing that to help me from time to time. Gives you a little bit more energy. I'm sure there's probably some research to back it up, somewhere.
