Being Diabetic can cause muscle cramps especially if you hve not done strecthing exercises prior to...as a diabetic you could be low on potassium but it is best to have a blood test to determine if you are as you could be low in other areas. Dehydration also can cause severe cramping, as well as low blood sugar. Do you test after? Call you doctor to discuss your problem.

I had a peek at your SparkPage and note that you are a Type II Diabetic - there COULD be a connection to this or other possible conditions, which is why you NEED to discuss it with your Dr rather than taking 'quick-fix' tips from SP members or anyone else!

Are you drinking enough fluids? You can get dehydrated in the water which can cause cramping. My foot is cramping as I type and I know I need to drink more ...got a little behind today on drinking and I sweat like a drippy towel when I work out. Lovely visual, huh?

There are many reasons for leg cramps and magnesium deficiency is only one of them. It could just as likely be something physical too, and as that started at the same time as your exercise regime, it needs to be considered. The only way you can do this properly and safely is to be assessed by your Dr.

Where it comes to tracking these sorts of nutrients, I wouldn't even start to do it. Many foods you eat have magnesium or other nutrients in them, but they don't have to be recorded in the Nutrition Label, so you could in fact be getting enough. Overdosing on some of these can be dangerous at worst and waste of money at best!

Hi,

Please be careful about using your food tracker to track magnesium and potassium. Neither of those nutrients is required to be included on food labels. As a result, many foods don't list those and so the values aren't available. Therefore, the amount you are actually getting is likely a good deal higher than what you see on your nutrition tracker totals.

Excesses of magnesium and potassium can be dangerous, so you should consult your physician before taking supplements. In addition, since you are saying that you are having cramping and spasms that you consider severe, you should consult your physician for recommendations.

1NANNY4,

If your leg cramps seemed to have begun when you started swimming, it's doubtful that you have a magnesium or potassium deficiency. You would have had leg cramps sooner if you did. Also, if you've been having regular physical exams, your blood tests would have turned up any deficiencies as well.

When is the last time you had a full physical ? If you haven't had a physical in a long time, you might consider having one done. Talk to your doctor about your leg cramps.

How long have you been swimming ? Has it only been three weeks ? Did you have any problems with leg cramps prior to starting to swim ? I was doing some research on your question and found several articles that have linked leg cramps to tension in their legs when swimming.

Is this your problem ? That's not a question any of us can answer because we don't know anything about you or your medical history. Before you take any supplements, talk to your doctor first. Have a physical done, because your blood work will determine if you really do have any vitamin or mineral deficiencies. Taking too high a dosage of any vitamin can cause problems.

So, while all the members (including me) mean well, your doctor is the best person to ask this question.
