I agree watching your food intake is one of the most important factors of weight loss. Its not just being at a certain caloric limit, but also what you eat. Your body needs certain levels of nutrition for it to work correctly. Sure, you can eat 1500 calories of Jamaican meat pies. But if you are not eating daily requirements of fruits, veggies, dairy, fats, etc. that is not balanced. I loose weight better with an exercise plan and a good food intake. Exercise makes a big difference. You can't exercise and expect to loose weight while over eating. Exercise takes up time I would other wise be in the kitchen. Exercise makes me less hungry, Exercise gives me energy, helps me sleep better if not longer. I don't spend hour after hour at the gym or on the trail. Just 1 hr a day. Its just what works for me. Keep looking for an activity that works for you. Find a partner. Or like me...just do it yourself for yourself!!

I agree with the other posters - for most people, weight loss is 80% weight loss, and just 20% exercise.
If you watch your intake, then you can lose weight without exercise at all. But adding some exercise in is definitely the healthier way to do it, and exercise can contribute significantly to your overall calorie deficit.
Certainly the lower body muscles (quads, glutes, etc) are the largest and strongest in the body, and burn the most calories. You're probably not going to build huge calorie totals (eg. 600-800 per workout) without using the lower body, but certainly you can burn 100-300 per workout with seated exercises, which can add up to material weight loss if you do them regularly.

I have never been able to lose weight with exercise. It is definitely watching what I eat that makes me lose weight. The exercise is more for strength and endurance and toning so I don't see why seated workouts wouldn't work. For cardio it is more a matter of getting your heart rate up there and while it is probably more difficult to get it up there seated, it is certainly not impossible.

As LEC noted, when it comes to weight loss, what matters most is what we eat. Good nutrition is what takes the weight off and keeps it off. exercise is what keeps our bodies fit. So, if you find that you can't stand for long periods and need to sit to do some upper body exercise, that's fine.
Have you tried any of the seated cardio workouts that Coach Nicole has posted in the fitness section ? Try those. You can also find seated workout DVDs for sale at amazon. If you can't afford to buy DVDs, check out YOUTUBE. If you search on seated cardio or cardiovascular chair workouts, you'll find a lot listed. Some seated chair routines can be quite vigorous.
Ever see what a wheelchair athlete can do with their upper bodies ? It's pretty amazing. So, yes, you can do seated exercises and still lose weight as long as you eat right and watch your portions. can't emphasize enough the importance of a healthy diet.

In weight loss, diet is actually much more important than exercise. So do what exercise you can, but really focus on what you eat as the key to losing weight.
