If I may just jump in and say..... Yesterday I ran up some stairs for probably the first time since I was 10 years old. A few years ago I could barely walk up the stairs; to be able to run up stairs made me immensely happy.
Any kind of exercise can help strengthen your core, since you use it in all activities that require balance and stability. It's not going to replace traditional core exercises, but can be a good workout.
