You might try joining a gym that offers free childcare.

New member 3 days ago. Retired since July 2006. I actually lost weight after a struggle to come down from about 195 lbs. (I'm only 5'2"!) I was down to 150 lbs for about 3 yrs., then the weight crept back up, now 175 lbs. Too much sitting. Too much computer time. I don't have a car so that's no excuse! I have to walk everywhere. I love the SparkPeople website with all the information available. And I can communicate with others, which is very nice. emoticon

I'm loving the free time. I'm able to enjoy the beautiful weather during the day instead of just lunch hours. I've met neighbors that have lived on this block for years but I never saw them. Life is good emoticon

If you're anything like me, when I'm looking after small children I tend to snack too much, and finish off things that they leave on their plates. I liked the message below which suggested taking them to the library, recreation centre or for some other kind of outing, and especially that you try to find someplace where there is daycare for the children or special programs that they can do on their own, while you take a program that you enjoy.

I don't know how long you've been retired, but I found it took me a good two years before I found actiities for me (mostly through my church) that satisfied me and gave me the opportunity to build new friendships to replace one work friends that I'd lost.

I am gleefully retired and need a personal assistant more now than ever. Many people think that retired folks don't have a schedule...they must spend their time eating bon bons and filing their nails. We know that is NOT true!

Look for recreation centers that have fitness classes and babysitting for your grandkids. Also, look for parks that you can walk to with the kids. I found it was good for me and my children to get out of the house at least once a day on some kind of an adventure to the library, or to the park. It not only got me off the couch, but walking, and kept me away from the fridge. (Of course you pack nutritional treats for you and the kids).

You could also put on a yoga or fitness dvd. you may not get through it all, but if you get 10 minutes, its better than none.

Wii fit is another option you could do at home.

Try volunteering when you've free time. It'll help you get off the couch

I'm retired professionally but do watch my 3 grandkids. I'm finding instead of staying in shape I've gotten out of shape and my eating habits have become hit and miss. Need support to get back on some kind of track to feeling better and loosing weight.
