Agreeing. I build in one scheduled rest day per week, and often life circumstances result in a second happening. I'd say that within each month, I probably take 6 rest days.

In short: yes. From what I gather, most exercise DVD plans are circuit training, which like the poster below has said is a combination of strength and cardio, and you need the rest days to heal.

When you're first starting out, you want to take at least one rest day a week. I occasionally take more than that, because I am injury prone. If I am more sore than usual, I take a rest day whether it was scheduled or not, even if my scheduled rest day was yesterday or the day before. Once you begin to consistently exercise you will learn your limits, and learn the difference between pushing yourself and pushing yourself too far. I would even go so far as to say take more than one day off if needed. Sometimes I push too far, and up needing two days in a row off. Don't beat yourself up over it, but don't use it as an excuse to quit either.

I always make sure to take one day off in a week,even if I'm not sore. Sometimes it's because I am busy, and simply do not have the time to exercise without neglecting important tasks, other times it's just because it's been six or seven days since I took a day off.

My days off usually consist of a short walk up to the park, and/or yoga and pilates. I am still staying active, because for me if I simply do nothing (unless I am extremely sore/in pain from various previous injuries/sick) I will fall off track and next thing you know it's been two and a half months since I last exercised. You don't have to laze around the house in your PJs, but definitely take the rest days and do less intense activities.

Just to ellaborate: When you exercise, both cardio and ST, you're breaking down the fibers of your muscles. Rest days allow time for your body to heal.

When you're first starting out, it's best to have at the very least one rest day a week. You won't do any harm by taking a nice walk or doing some physical work around the house (gardening, cleaning), but you should abstain from high intensity workouts.

I recommend 1-2 rest days each week, especially if you're just starting out. Your body needs that time to recovery, because it's actually during the recovery periods that you get stronger.

I recently purchased a DVD exercise pack that came with a 30 day workout plan. Every 4th day is a "rest day". Do I really need to rest? It seems like a wasted day. The plan includes cardio days and strenght days. I think it is for beginners to intermediate level.
