Something I'm doing this year for little gifts is making lotion bars - they are very easy to make and consist of 1/2 c. organic coconut, 1/2 c. raw shea butter, 2/3 c. beeswax (pastilles work best), 1 tsp vitamin E oil and whatever essential oils I want to use for scent. Melt it all together and pour into a mold (don't add the essential oils until the end) - I use a silicon baking pan that has 8 oval shaped "wells". Let them set up for several hours. They make great gifts and are very moisturizing, espeically for hands, feet, elbows and knees.

Thanks for all these great tips! My skin has been uncharacteristically dry for the past month or so, and so far everything I've tried has not helped. But this thread gave me some new options and I look forward to using them!
I have the same problem of very dry skin and not knowing what to do for it since I moved to Mesa AZ 4 years ago from MI. Thanks for the ideas..I had shea butter before and it is good. I am going to revisit that treatment.

100% pure unrefined shea butter. not a lotion that has is added in. i get it from amazon buy the pound, mix it with a little food grade almond oil because it smells to me. i have all kinds of skin issues and this is the only thing that works. cost about $12 lb but lasts me a year.

This has been a tough winter so far and it hasn't even started yet! Been pretty cold here...I have taken to rubbing my hands fully with Vaseline and wearing special gloves I bought at Walgreen's to moisture them overnight!

if you're talking about the Neutrogena Norwegian formula - it is REALLY good. A bit too heavy for all over, but I love it for feet, hands, knees, and elbows
Lolema, Neutrogena makes a really good concentrated hand cream. I looked at the description and it says glycerin rich. I couldn't tell if it has those other ingredients that you don't prefer. Hope that helps.

I run a humidifier in our house all winter.
I am also guilty of hot showers!
My hands are the driest and can't keep them moisturized.
I use Keri as all over body lotion but seeking a good hand cream.
Pure raw organic coconut oil is awesome! I personally avoid mineral oil and other petroleum-based products for what I think are obvious reasons (but I know others won't agree with me) - who wants to put petroleum (and other chemicals) on their skin????

All of the others have had good suggestions. I think working from the inside out really helps.
I take 2000 mg fish oil a day, eat lots of salmon, use Neutogena bath oil after every shower and when the really bad itchies hit my shins I use Gold Bond Medicated lotion. It's the only thin that really works for me.

I have very dry skin. I like Curel, Aveeno, and AmLactin
AmLactin is pricey; CVS has a store brand that is just as good & much cheaper. It's on the shelf right next to AmLactin and the label says "compare to AmLactin"
I live in Ohio and get terrible Winter Skin, Seems lotions and oils help some but provide temporary relief. Long ago a senior citizen told me to take flaxseed oil, 1 capsule in the morning, other at night and it would help, couldn't hurt so I tried it and it took several weeks to notice the difference, but it works! Now I begin taking the flaxseed oil capsules in September before the weather becomes dry. I still use a small amount of vaseline on my skin after showering to replentish the oils that were washed off. I hope you find something that works for you.

I have very dry skin and hair because of thyroid problems. Obviously getting proper hydration is a good first step. Taking flax and fish oil every day seems to help a lot. Do not bathe in super-hot water or use harsh cleansers. The oil cleansing method (I just use plain olive oil) is a great way to keep your face healthy and moisturized. You can add more Omega 3 fats to your diet. If you have dry hair, combing through some coconut oil and running hair dryer over it, then washing and styling as normal can work wonders.
When I get really desperate, I put a teapot full of water on the stove and let it boil down until my home is humidified. This is especially helpful if you live in a dry climate/at a high altitude.
